Since releasing their acclaimed
‘TEETH’ EP last year,
Cody Frost has been further embraced by the
UK rock community, most notably with a nomination for
UK Breakthrough Artist at the
Heavy Music Awards as well as the ongoing support of
Enter Shikari. They recruited
Cody to perform on the track
‘BULL’ and then at their
Radio 1 Maida Vale session, invited them to join them on tour in the
UK and
Europe, and their frontman
Rou Reynolds made a surprise appearance during
Cody’s set at
2000trees. Further high-profile bands have also heralded her talents, leading to other collaborations with both
Bury Tomorrow and
You Me At Six.
Throughout this time, Cody has been working on new material and today shares the first taste of a new explosive sound with the single ‘WOT?’. Listen HERE. Watch the video HERE.
‘WOT?’ sounds as if Cody put their favourite genre touchpoints into a blender and emerged with a caustic cocktail of aggro attitude which can appeal to fans of punk, hyperpop, nu-metal and dub without being limited by any one of those genres. Cody sounds particularly liberated, their eclectic vocal range taking in melodic highs, feral snarls, and rap-rock rhymes. Lyrically it’s a satire that focuses upon the dark side of the music industry, capped by the killer sarcasm of the hook, “The tune’s all wrong but we all still sing.”
Cody says, “‘WOT?’ is a song about a made up character who chooses downers as his main vice. It’s a sad tale about drug abuse in the music industry. I wanted to challenge the preconception around the industry being glamorous and party filled and really bring to light a big issue that a lot of creatives face, addiction. Whether it be addiction to the craft, or addiction to substances, there is always a craving for that buzz, or that release.”
‘WOT?’ was written by Cody and produced by her regular collaborator Dan Weller (Enter Shikari, Bury Tomorrow, Sea Girls).
Originally from Burnley, Cody Frost wanted to be Gerard Way of My Chemical Romance when they were in their early teens, and took the first steps by busking in Manchester and posting covers stretching from Frank Ocean to Slipknot online.
Cody’s strengths are in defying conventions, challenging expectations, breaking the rules and finding cohesion amongst the sonic chaos that they instigate. The ‘TEETH’ EP went further still, bringing echoes of 100 gecs, dark pop, electro-punk and industrial into the mix. Appealing to fans of both Ashnikko and Bring Me The Horizon, the EP was rewarded with continuing support from Jack Saunders at Radio 1 and shows with carolesdaughter.
A self-confessed introverted extravert, Cody channels creativity into different artforms. In their quieter moments you’ll find them creating art or working as a tattooist, while music fulfils Cody’s desire to take centre-stage and make a connection with fans.
In addition to 2000trees, this summer also saw Cody hit festivals including Download, Make A Scene and Misery Loves Company.
