CINEMA STEREO / 12:34 / ALBUM REVIEW

8

Cinema Stereo are originally from Florida but are now based in Nashville, where their brand of Rock fits comfortably with the area’s music. Their music defies genres with a widescreen musical diversity; the trio of musicians, Ian Rayha (lead vocals, bass, guitar, keyboards, Sebastian Borysek lead guitar and Jeffrey Lagaveen drums), have a range of influences from Queen, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, and The Police; their debut album is a revealing affair as it shows a band still trying to forge their identity. The album is packed with ideas and contrasting moods; it is a mix of Classic and Alternative Rock with an atmospheric texture.

‘Flood’ (the album opener) immediately establishes the band’s energetic style, with ‘Over The Edge’ and ‘Now We Feel Special’ following with plenty of melody and hooks. ‘A Moment Of Feeling Alone’ completely changes the mood, demonstrating that there is more emotional depth than the opening tracks suggest. ‘1.23’ is brief, it expresses that feeling we get when a fleeting moment arrives that can change the direction of our lives, though short it sits at the centre of the record. The album title itself is a metaphor for moments like these, when your life gains perspective and focus.

Themes that permeate the music are growing up, relationships and self-doubt, a snapshot of life. ‘Expectations’, ‘Flowers’ and ‘Lean On You’ are amongst the most accessible songs; the latter, in particular, shows the band’s ability to combine infectious melody with real emotion. The second half of the album is more reflective, with ‘All I Want’ and ‘Tears’ slowing the pace before ‘Proxima’ brings the record to an expansive conclusion. Cinema Stereo haven’t arrived with a fully formed blueprint; they have arrived with curiosity, enthusiasm and some great ideas. Producer Paul Moak keeps everything sounding crisp and punchy; the harmonies and keys are enhanced, making it a promising debut that suggests a big future.
