August Burns Red // Season Of Surrender // Album Review

Lancaster, Pennsylvania proggy metalcore metalheads August Burns Red are back with their latest offering ‘Season Of Surrender’ courtesy of Fearless Records this coming Friday, June 5th.

This one hits hard right from the off; the band launch a frantic attack on the senses with a blistering track, “Legions” [Feat. Mike Hranica), and it just goes from strength to strength from there! The band are as savage as it gets within their sphere, technically sublime; you just get lost in the unyielding precision they possess across this album. The blistering pace with which they execute each track is just something to admire.

Put that against the soaring vocals of Jake Luhrs, and you have a collection of tracks to knock the teeth right outta your head; the rhythmical punishment is breathtaking. Savage just isn’t a good enough word to describe the intensity and brutality with which they carry out track after track. I know that Metalcore has dramatically evolved over the years, but ABR have taken it to an obscene level on this album.

It is glorious! The mind boggles as to how these beauties are created, whether in the mid or in the studio, as they lay down what so many musicians could only dream of. My mind is a pool of gooey mess, melted by the cacophony of notes unleashed on every track, but the melodic nature of the band, which shines through its brutality, allows it all to come together as they make sure that their fans have something to cling to, warbling along at their live shows.

You have a few collabs on the album, with friends like Mike Hranica, Jamie Hails, and Make Them Suffer making appearances, so there is more than enough to sink your teeth into on this one. Each song seems to be bigger, faster and hit harder than the last, or maybe I need to just keep the fuck up! But overall, you have a collection of ten tracks that will simply leave you breathless, mesmerised and begging for more.

August Burns Red have done it again, not for the faith-hearted, Season Of Surrender is a timely reminder that ABR are ageing like a fine wine. The musicianship is sublime; the production is glorious, allowing every subtle nuance to shine throughout the recording; the technicality is on another level; and all is perfectly executed by one of the best in the business.

Only one thing … Please, sir, can I have some more?
