Triggertone // Bombs Away // Album Review

You know that feeling when you are on to something special; well, let me tell you, from the very first note on Triggertone’s new EP “Bombs Away,” that is exactly what happens.

I don’t care what genre or subgenre you want to categorise it as; the only thing that matters is that this rocks. Opener “Pray” belies the fact that this band is a three-piece; the bass and drums from Houston and Scuillion, respectively, provide a heavy beat that is the perfect foil for the killer guitar work from Graves, with his thick riffs and excellent solo that has such groove to it, while his vocals are brilliant, intense but not over the top, very apt for this track.

The echoey guitar opening on “Room 1046” gives a feeling of impending doom, but that is not the case; it has a grungy stoner vibe that is accentuated by Graves’ languid vocals and his hypnotic riffs, Scuillion’s tight drum beat and Houston’s thick bass line that underpins the track; a cracking track. “The Fade” has a restrained, nearly morose feel, rising and falling between verses and choruses. Graves keeps it restrained for the most part, only really breaking at the chorus; the track changes tack midway through, becoming more melodic with a cracking solo that, if anything, is uplifting as the drums and bass fall in line with the change as the track runs out.

The title track “Bombs Away” closes the EP in ripping fashion; taking an edgier stance with a more aggressive tone, the band kick it up a notch but not so much that it overshadows all that has come before. The buzzing riffs, thumping bass, and pounding drums combine to create a banging rhythm that gives the track a nice hard-rock feel. Grave’s vocals are killer, and the screamed backing vocals add to the vibe- a fitting way to close out a banger EP.

Bombs Away is the band’s third EP; hopefully, there will be a full-length album in the not-too-distant future, as these three lads know how to make a tune.
