Prevailer // Convalescent // Album Review

It’s been a while to wait for the debut album by Prevailer, but it’s finally landing.

Having formed in 2015 and released their debut EP in 2016, the band have released a number of singles, but now the band feel like they have the line-up the new album deserves and a label that feels right – so the stars have aligned. What’s this 8-track album all about?

The album runs 28 minutes from start to finish, and from the off, there is a feeling of Progressive Metalcore, with a metallic smash across the face and an almost Post Hardcore feel to join the gang in the sound.

The chugs are heavy and defined, the drums are crushing, the bass leads discreetly from the front, and the vocal blend ranges from a very gravelly bark to a smooth-as-velvet clean; the two work very well together, even though they are as far apart as possible.

As the opener fades, you have a pretty good idea of what is to come, and yes, it is as good as ‘Diseased Frames’ was.

The raw aggression continues to flow through that brutal vocal as the guitars pick apart any structure that you are hiding behind; yes, that down-tuned low end is what drives and holds it all together in spectacular fashion. That is not taking anything away from the rest of the sound and vocal, but for me it is an aspect that is often overlooked, but when you build up from a foundation like that – you are on to something special.

As the album progresses, the vocals battle yet complement each other like very few others, and the drums keep testing a familiar pattern, and the guitars are on full-on assault with little to no let-up. This is a full-on release, and the pressure rarely lets up.

The 28 minutes feel like you have done a full work out by the time that its finished – but you also have that satisfaction inside like when you’ve done your workout. The endorphins will be as free flowing as the fists that you will be throwing when listening to it.

For me, this is the future sound of metal and shows that Metalcore, when done right is something to behold. I for one don’t mind the wait for an album when it hits as hard as this and catapults the band into a new league.
