Dublin trio Really Good Time share their debut album Affirmations today.
The record brings together singles “Shit One”, “Bob Dylan Was On Pawn Stars in 2010”, “Do It” and “The Love Song” alongside new material, and arrives as the fullest statement yet from a band who’ve spent the past two years building toward it. Affirmations sits with the temptation to disengage – from the news, from other people, from the relentless grind – a rejection of navel-gazing nihilism, delivered with black humour and no small amount of noise.

On the album, the band say: “Our debut album Affirmations is out now, after four years and change of RGT, and it’s hard to put into words what that feels like for us.”
“The world has been going through… interesting times since then, to say the least (omg are we the sea people etc.). This album started with a kind of doomsday thinking, with a creeping sense that we were waking up hungover at the end of history. For anyone that resonates with, I’m sure you may agree that this isn’t necessarily the most affirming feeling to meditate upon.”

The run of singles leading into the release established the band’s range: the coiled, angular menace of “Do It”, with its grimly funny account of grinding through Irish suburbia in the teeth of a housing crisis; the spiralling absurdism of “Bob Dylan Was On Pawn Stars in 2010”; and most recently “The Love Song”, the first single sung by bassist Jacque le Coque, which kicks off with an air raid siren and lands somewhere between manic and tender. “Do It” has also featured daily on RTÉ’s World Cup coverage.
The record arrives off the back of a relentless stretch of live activity. This year alone the band have played two packed-out sets at The Great Escape – hit SXSW, and played stages alongside Franz Ferdinand, The Murder Capital, Gurriers and The Scratch. They play a run of Ireland in-store dates, play Dublin’s Collins Barracks on 30th August supporting Super Furry Animals and Baxter Dury, before heading out on full UK and EU tours this autumn.
Championed on radio by Steve Lamacq (BBC 6 Music), John Kennedy (Radio X), Gemma Bradley (BBC NI), and RTÉ 2FM’s Dan Hegarty and January Winters, the band have drawn consistent coverage from Rolling Stone UK, CLASH, The Line of Best Fit, DIY, Dork, Kerrang! and The Sunday Times.
