Birmingham’s Flesh Creep are a band that take the personal rage of the injustices seen around them and use it as fuel to spark positive change within their community. Their debut album We Need You To Bleed, was re-released this year via Music For Nations as an 11 track manifesto to eviscerate society’s ills, clocking in at 22 minutes. If their debut album was the band calling out the injustices around them, then their forthcoming new EP Glimmer (due for release on 17th July), is an example of them doing the inner work necessary for the strength to stand for something. A much more introspective release than their debut, Glimmer delves into personal loss, the uncomfortable role as a “frontman” and exploring their true voice as a band by delving into more diverse sonics than ever before. Previous single ‘Bubblegum’ was inspired by a love of pop songwriting and an experimentation with those song structures, while new single ‘Flake’, released today, finds the band in devastating form once again. A biting, snarling cut of the hardcore genre that they’ve built their foundations upon, ‘Flake’ opens in venomous form, with vocalist Tom Patrick’s voice shredding through conspiracy and grifter culture; taking aim at the echo-chambers that begin with harmful online misinformation and are amplified by your coworkers. Each facet of the band is working at the height of their powers on the track, powered by a driving percussive line, the band’s guitars veers from relentless to groove driven, with a full-bodied bassline anchoring the chaos. It’s a dynamic shock to the system that clocks in at under three-minutes, not wasting a second of its runtime for maximum impact. Written by bassist Jack Miles after attending a Palestine benefit show from SPEED, Scowl and Pest Control at Birmingham’s Centrala in the wake of their 2024 Download Fest cancellation, Jack says on its creation:
“The instruments for Flake were written after attending a Palestine benefit show at Centrala in June 2024. It was one of those shows where you just had to be there – Scowl, Pest Control & how people came together in particular, left a lasting impression. The intention for ‘Flake’, was to create something that hopefully brings people together, gets them moving, and gives them something to jump to.” In essence, ‘Flake’ follows a wider ethos for Flesh Creep’s sweat-soaked vision for punk and hardcore; unity within the rage against societal flaws. Coming together to destroy what’s wrong with the world is coming together all the same, and when we are united, we are stronger. With Glimmer, Flesh Creep are experimenting with their own intense formula, exploring new avenues and broadening the horizons of one of the UK’s most exciting emerging heavy bands. Merely a glimpse into the potential of Flesh Creep, July 17th will see another evolution in a group that will never stop confronting the difficult questions head on, creating incredible, incendiary art and hoping to see a better world both personally and collectively in the process. Glimmer is available to pre-order on limited run CD recycled digipak, and a pink & blue bubblegum 12” vinyl. Both formats are available on the Flesh Creep merch store HERE.
