Titans Vomitory have returned with another lesson in true Swedish death metal.
Formed in 1989 with an early sound influenced by Sodom, Napalm Death, Slayer, and Venom, the band, as we know it, Vomitory, with their now-legendary chainsaw-like death metal sound, would be on display on their first album, 1996’s “Raped in Their Own Blood”.
In the mid-90s, Vomitory were one of the pillars of the Swedish death metal genre, alongside Grave, At The Gates & Unleashed.
The band would release seminal albums over the years until their break-up in 2013. Thankfully, the breakup of the band wasn’t definitive, and the group reformed in 2019 to celebrate 30 years since their debut album.
Since reforming, the band released 2023’s “All Heads Are Gonna Roll,” which blew away the underground, and they still have a lot of fire within.
Now, in 2026, the band are releasing the next chapter in the second wave of their career with the mighty “In Death Throes” via Metal Blade Records.
Ten tracks of the fastest, grooviest & violent death metal the band has put on record to date! Opening track “Rapture in Rupture” gets its big old hooks into you straight away. No messing about, this one is a true lesson in how it’s done.
With its breakneck blasting opening, a whirlwind of riffage before the band halts for long enough to introduce the track’s main riffs, which are like a machine blast to the chest. Vocalist & Bassist Erik Rundqvist’s guttural singing style fits nicely over the high-end buzzing guitar tone, creating a dynamic that the band have always maintained firmly. This track is the quickest on the album, a nice under-three-minute taste of what’s to come: blood, sweat & brutality…
“For Gore and Country” is the next track, a pure assault on the senses. Opening like its namesake & feeling like you are getting blasted with enemy militia. This track has the perfect Vomitory DNA, with great blasting sections that still grab your attention while also bringing melody—the big, catchy-style riffs & vocal hooks. Only a few of the OSDM bands have this within their arsenal. The chorus section on this track has some of the best riffing I’ve heard from the group for a while.
Guitarists Urban Gustafsson & newcomer to the band Christian Fredriksson have a great interplay, crafting a strong tone on this album, & having fresh blood within the group has allowed them to add a few subtle songwriting elements to their current sound while also keeping that Vomitory legacy strong.
At the album’s halfway mark, the title track “In Death Throes” is a great lesson in the band’s punishing, brutal side. This one is a throat-ripper of a track. The opening of a lone echoing guitar could lull you in thinking this is gonna be something soft, but hell no. quickly, the band brings the heaviness & switches things up. This fast, aggressive attack hits the nerves & gets you pumped, with a chorus that feels anthemic, featuring heavy riffage and a soaring melodic feel.
Drummer Tobias Gustafsson gets to really show off his chops on this one. The breakneck speed of the blasting sections really shows what a powerhouse contestant he is, but on the flip side, the cymbal choices he makes, and even the fills he adds, really give the band huge dynamics that other bands in the genre lack.
“Erased in Red” with its Slayer vibe opens with a great heavy bassline from Rundqvist that grabs you straight away, then these great little lead licks kick in & drive the song forward. This one is a little more of a striped back track. Heavy on the feel & catchy side but still hits like a ten-ton hammer. Definitely one of the favourite tracks on the album. Can see this one going down live really well!
“In Death Throes” as an album is the perfect showcase of how the blend of melodic elements of death metal with the chaotic tones & brutality of the genre is also created. Vomitory have not only been able to return as a band with the energy & power they once had, but they have also been able to create music this far into their music career that matches & I even think is better than the band’s early and much-beloved material.
The album is as grotesque as a rotting corpse, but still, the clarity & precision of the scalpel blade! This album is a must listen if you love death metal & are hungry for something in that OSDM sound.
