Of Limbo // Unplugged // Album Review

8

When this album landed on my desk, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Of Limbo are Australian Brothers Jake and Luke Davies, raised in Melbourne, Australia, but relocated to Long Beach, CA, to make their mark on the American dream.  The album opens with an acoustic instrumental featuring a distinctly Spanish/flamenco flavour, immediately reminding me of the likes of Rodrigo y Gabriela, and teasing us as to where this album will take us next.

As it is, a tasty Van Halen cover, ‘Finish What Ya Started’ and what a cover! If you were at your local bar and heard a band ripping this out acoustically, I think you’d have to pinch yourself and ask the question … Have I died and gone to heaven?  All we tend to get locally are bastardised versions of ‘Brown Eyed Girl’ by Van Morrison. The mix of glorious harmonising vocals and a slick guitar solo captures the imagination and showcases the quality Of Limbo have under their belt. ‘Jokes On You’ is up next and has a dark, emotive vibe with its jarring melodic feel. These guys know how to grab your attention, and this is one of those tracks that will have you making that ‘Stank Face’ as you tap your foot along with its banging chorus,

One of the standout tracks on the album has to be their cover of ‘Street Spirit’ by Radiohead, not to beat around the bush, the track itself is majestic, Radiohead’s original is flawless, and one of my favourite cover versions of this is The Darkness’ thrashing rock version, absolutely killer. But Of Limbo’s take is more along the lines of the original with a subtle, tasteful variation in vocal lines and flavour. ‘Something Real’ has a more laid-back commercial vibe that will pull you in and wrap its sonic arms around you like a warm blanket on a cool summer’s night. It once again drives home the variation and range within the band to deliver quality songs on various levels.

All throughout the album is dripping in quality, the band are on fire and no more so as it wraps up with two live tracks, Alice In Chains ‘Down In A Hole’ and ‘Little Darlin to drive that message home. If you weren’t familiar with Of Limbo, ‘Unplugged’ is an absolute must to break yourself in gently before you go down that rabbit hole, cos it’s going to happen once you open that Pandora’s box.

Of Limbo has put together a seriously tasty recording, with sublime musicianship from start to finish it could be the perfect sundtrack to your summer.
