London’s hardcore punk band CHAOS REIGNS have dropped their highly anticipated new EP, Sweet Violence, a record that tackles some of the darkest and most raw aspects of the human experience. Featuring the focus track ‘The Lotus King (Ft. Mikey Chapman)’, the EP confronts themes of love, death, murder, obsession, greed, mental health, suicide, and addiction, offering a brutally honest reflection on the fine line between pain and pleasure, life and death.
On the EP release, vocalist JasonHeightman comments: “Sweet Violence is a collection of the most personal and ambitious songs we’ve ever written. We challenged ourselves musically and lyrically, writing in all directions to create something that is both chaotic and calculated, brutal and beautiful – we hope you enjoy it.”
CHAOS REIGNS – ‘Violent Delights’
With over 1,500 monthly listeners on Spotify, 20,000 YouTube views for ‘Graveyard Shift‘, 15,000 for ‘Sins of Success‘, 22,000 for ‘Violent Delights‘, CHAOS REIGNS continue to expand their sonic reach with Sweet Violence, blending their trademark aggression with meticulous production, capturing the band at their most visceral. They’ve crafted their sound alongside studio legends Jason Wilson and Charlie Wilson (Stakeout Studios) and most recently Oz Craggs (Hidden Track Studios). The EP features a guest spot from MalloryKnox’s Mikey Chapman, and promises to be an unrelenting auditory onslaught. “Working with Oz allowed us to push our sound further than ever before,” says Heightman. “His ability to translate our raw energy into something that hits hard but remains refined was crucial to bringing the intensity of SweetViolence to life.”
Sweet Violence is a collection of tracks that is both chaotic and calculated, capturing the tension between the beauty and brutality of existence. Exploring the human psyche at its most vulnerable and highlighting the fragile balance between self-destruction and survival, Heightman explains: “We wanted to create something that cuts deep, that explores the contradictions of life – where love can turn to obsession, and where the things that drive us can also destroy us. SweetViolence is a reflection of the world we live in – where the boundary between pain and pleasure, life and death, is razor-thin.”
Drawing influence from the distinctly more frantic end of the hardcore spectrum, CHAOS REIGNS are less focused on achieving a ‘brutal’ sound, and more so on eschewing genre cliches and tropes. “What I love about the more chaotic side of hardcore and mathcore is that anything goes”, shares bassist BillyPadmore. “The bands really try to keep the listener guessing, even if by doing something as simple as adding one extra beat to a repeated phrase. This is something we were aiming for, and we’ve already seen people in the crowd paying more attention and getting thrown off guard by some of our ‘weirder’ moments”.
