A new take on Alberta Cross’s debut, which set the foundation for their Americana-tinged indie and alternative sound, the re-imagined album hosts many musical features from friends. Re-recorded in Frome, Somerset, at Ethan John and Dom Monks (Big Thief) Bert Jansch studio, the release was self-produced by Alberta Cross vocalist Petter Ericson Stakee, and mastered at the hallowed Abbey Road Studios with 360 Mastering. Across the album, there’s a wealth of contributions from musicians that have crossed paths with Alberta Cross over the course of their two decade long career – Katie Melua, Jack Savoretti, Dylan Le Blanc, Tomas Andersson, Ed Harcourt & more. Their re-works honour the original whilst breathing new life into each track. A lot has changed over the past two decades, but it’s clear from ‘The Thief And The Heartbreaker (Re-Imagined) that Alberta Cross’s songwriting and debut release remain timeless. Listen to the album here. “‘The Thief & The Heartbreaker’ was Alberta Cross’s first release as a band and was basically our first 3 demo sessions”, comments Petter, “I love the vibe of those original recordings still but it felt great to do a proper studio recorded version of the record all these years later. Especially with such an all-star band of mates, I’m so chuffed that so many of my artist friends wanted to be part of the celebration of this record. They all sang incredibly lush and made this record beyond special”. Originally released in 2007 as a collection of self produced demos, Alberta Cross’s ‘The Thief and The Heartbreaker’ set the blueprint of their sound. “It felt so great writing those songs” recalls Petter. “Wherever I play in the world, I still have to play them. It felt so pure, it was one of the most exciting times I’ve had as a songwriter”. What followed was success on both sides of the Atlantic and the relentless grind of US touring that comes with it. They embarked on high-profile jaunts with Mumford & Sons, Portugal. The Man, Neil Young, Them Crooked Vultures and Rag N’ Bone Man and performed on distinguished TV shows around the globe, appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman, Last Call with Carson Daly and more, whilst their tracks were featured on hit TV shows such as Million Little Pieces, Sons Of Anarchy and Californication. To mark today’s album release Alberta Cross has teamed up with Starsailor’s James Walsh for a new rendition of ‘I’ve Known For Long’. Listen here. Petter speaks on the collaboration, “Since the early London days in the 2000s I’ve been a fan of James Walsh’s songwriting and vocals in Starsailor. A great band named after an epic Tim Buckley record. I remember seeing them play at a few festivals and they were grand. I feel lucky to have him on this record and to now call him a friend. James jumped on a train from London to come over to my studio in Frome to record his vocals which was awesome and he killed it in a few takes”.
