When Johnny Borrell reunited the Razorlight line-up that made them one of the biggest bands of the early 2000s, it was always going to be an all-or-nothing situation. And together with bandmates Björn Ågren (guitar), Carl Dalemo (bass) and Andy Burrows (drums), they exceeded expectations with ‘Planet Nowhere’, an album that’s as strong as anything they delivered the first time around – a statement backed by a first flurry of critical acclaim.
Johnny says, “It’s out, ‘PLANET NOWHERE’. Our first album back in six years and the first by all of us since 2008. I’ve said it before but we truly didn’t think this would happen. We were never going to put more music out that we didn’t believe in, but I genuinely feel this could be a cult favourite Razorlight record. The reaction live has been immense and might just be some of the best Razorlight gigs we’ve ever done. Welcome to ‘Planet Nowhere’.”
The likes of ‘Zombie Love’ and ‘Scared of Nothing’ made a big impact ahead of release, with highlights including ‘Zombie Love’ being Radio X’s Record of the Week, the band playing sessions for Chris Moyles at Radio X and for Virgin Radio, plus further airplay from Radio 2 and Amazing Radio. Their story was also explored with fresh features from NME, The Guardian and many more. And they’ve been on fire in the live arena too, selling out their entire underplay tour in advance and receiving rapturous receptions as they played the majority of the new album alongside their big hitters.
The rest of ‘Planet Nowhere’ lives up to the standard of its singles, especially the new focus track ‘Dirty Love’, a gently melodic ‘70s-tinged rootsy rock ballad that would’ve surely ascended the charts had it been released in 2006. Mostly, however, Razorlight are bringing the swaggering energy that fans became enamoured with originally, from the instantly memorable “I hate cocaine” refrain from ‘U Can Call Me’ to the jangly, self-aware indie-pop strut of ‘Cool People’ and keeping their driving momentum at a peak through to the closer and future fan favourite ‘April Ends’.
‘Planet Nowhere’ starts a new chapter for Razorlight. Their original era was full of landmark moments, with hits such as ‘Golden Touch’, ‘Somewhere Else’, ‘In The Morning’, ‘America’ and ‘Wire To Wire’ driving three Top 5 albums, nine Platinum album certifications, an NME Award, and live highlights including headlining the Reading Festival and performing at Live 8.
Physical formats of the album are available to buy HERE. The band’s official store offers two vinyls, a CD and a cassette with options for bundles and signed copies. Retailer exclusives include a pink obi-strip signed vinyl (from Assai), purple vinyl (hmv), signed orange marble vinyl (Record Store and The Sound of Vinyl) and smokey vinyl (select indie stores).
The band celebrate the release of ‘Planet Nowhere’ by embarking upon a record store tour at Rough Trade East tonight. Most events are sold-out, but limited tickets for Birmingham and Manchester will be available on the day, while remaining Newcastle tickets are available HERE. Next month they play a special ‘Up All Night’ anniversary show at the O2 Academy Brixton which sold-out weeks ago.
Their plans continue into 2025, starting with a set at Kaiser Chiefs’ big outdoor extravaganza at Temple Newsam Park in Leeds. And Razorlight have just been confirmed as headliners at The Brit Fest in July where they top a bill featuring Republica, Roachford, Toploader and The Boo Radleys.
