VILLANELLE (Gene Gallagher, Ben Taylor and Jack Schiavo) have been building serious momentum, with their first three singles – ‘Placebo,’ ‘Measly Means,’ and ‘Hinge’ – earning them widespread attention across the tastemaker spectrum alongside strong airplay from Radio 1’s Future Artists (Sian Eleri), Radio X (John Kennedy), Absolute and Sirius XM. The band now mark a key milestone with the release of their debut EP ‘Measly Means’, also featuring the new track ‘Opportunity Arising.’
Frontman Gene Gallagher says, “’Measly Means’ is our first body of work, and we put a lot of work into these songs. It’s a defining moment for us as a band and one, we’re very proud of.”
Their reputation so far has been built on full-throttle grunge and alt-rock, delivered with irrepressible charisma. Yet ‘Opportunity Arising’ presents a different side to their sound: an introspective shoegaze wall-of-sound driven by sweeping slide guitar that cuts through with haunting intensity. The track leans more toward the moodier edge of the ‘90s UK indie scene and has become a fan favourite at recent live shows.
Gallagher adds, “’Opportunity Arising’ is one of my favourites as it shows a different side to our usual heavy riffs, branching out into a softer style of music which we love and plan to experiment further with in the future’
Featuring all their previous singles, the five-track ‘Measly Means’ EP is completed by a second brand new track, ‘Squeeze’. Sonically sitting neatly between their earlier releases, it shares the downtempo feel of ‘Opportunity Arising’ but with a touch of the raw vulnerability and grit of Alice In Chains’ starker moments.
The initial run of the ‘Measly Means’ EP vinyl sold out on fan pre-order alone. A further 1,000 units are now in production to meet demand across the UK and North America and are available for pre-order this week in all good independent record shops.
VILLANELLE’s touring schedule spans major festivals on both sides of the Atlantic. In the UK, they will appear at The Great Escape, Boardmasters and Neighbourhood Festival, with Rock N Roll Circus (alongside Richard Ashcroft) the latest addition. In Europe, they will also play Mad Cool Festival in Spain. Meanwhile, their North American run includes the Governor’s Ball, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Vans Warped Tour and Shaky Knees Festival, plus select headline shows in New York, Boston, Detroit, Toronto and more yet to be announced.
