Myles Kennedy // The Art Of Letting Go // Album Review

I have to admit Myles Kennedy is one of my favourite rock vocalists out there today, his work Alter Bridge and Slash has been stellar to say the least, one of the most recognisable voices in modern rock, he has been at the very top of his game for many, many years indeed, in my humble opinion he’s right up there with the majestic Chris Cornell and has that instantly captivating tone that demands your attention when he sings.

One of my favourite gigs ever was when Myles rolled through Belfast before the shamdemic on a solo tour, and capturing him up close and personal in an intimate venue was truly spectacular. So I am looking forward to his return this December with the full band in support of his latest solo offering, ‘The Art Of Letting Go’.

What can you expect from a Myles Kennedy solo album, well all that glorious ingrained hard-hitting rock and metal you get with any Alter Bridge and Slash album, what you soon realise when you start listening to his solo work is that there is so much of Myles Kennedy in both bands DNA. I remember chatting with Glenn Hughes about his role in Black Country Communion and through the conversation I realised where in my own head I had assumed Joe Bonamassa was the driving force behind the songwriting, after chatting with Glenn and going back and listening to the songs I heard Glenn’s influence all over them, and once you delve into ‘The Art Of Letting Go’ you’ll know Myles is as valuable an asset in the songwriting process well beyond his vocals.

A friend toured with Slash and Myles many years ago and spoke of his quality as a guitarist after spending time with him on tour, this album drives that home in spades, most often known for being the front man axe in hand, of course, he shows off his abilities live on stage but a lot of people just won’t understand of the quality of this man as a beast on the guitar, they soon will. The riffs are slamming, the solo work gnarly and of course all fused together by glorious vocal harmonies and addictive song writing that just makes you want to crank up this glorious album and lose yourself in its magnificence for as long as you can.

This is a stunning album, if you are already a fan of the man and the bands he has captivated with over the years you will absolutely love this, if you have yet to dip your toes into the pool of Myles Kennedy now is the time, The Art Of Letting Go is a glorious beacon of light in the world of modern rock that only comes along once in a while, it’s is just dripping in quality.

To celebrate the release of The Art Of Letting Go, Myles Kennedy and his trio will be hitting the road in support of the new album, with an extensive European tour starting October 27 in Germany. A 6-date UK run with support from Devin Townsend is on sale for November and December.
