Following a string of high-octane singles, London’s finest purveyors of unadulterated rock’n’roll The Karma Effect today release their joyous sophomore album ‘Promised Land’ via Earache Records.
The album offers 10 tracks of raw, hook-laden rock’n’roll positively gleaming with 80s shimmer. Recorded at MRC Studios and The Hive Studios with Michael Charman, the album was built on escapism from start to finish. “When we were creating the album, it felt like we had found our own bubble of utopia – nothing in the outside world mattered in those moments. That’s exactly what we want to offer anyone who takes the time to listen to the album,” the band elaborate.
To celebrate the band are also releasing the raucous ‘All Night Long’. Channelling ‘Use Your Illusion’-era Guns N’ Roses, as well as a healthy dose of boogie rock, the track is an ode to lust and love in no uncertain terms.
“This was one of my favourite vocal performances on the record,” says Henry, referring to the emotion and gritty nature of his vocals throughout the track. The song also features the gospel-esque vocals of Mariam Mickels, which provide a great contrast to Henry’s voice, and utilises the southern rock influence that The Karma Effect pull off so well. “We love using female vocals, and Mariam’s voice fit the bill perfectly for what we wanted to achieve with this song.”
Emerging from the UK’s vibrant hard rock scene during the pandemic, The Karma Effect meld the hip-shaking blues rock stylings of contemporaries like The Temperance Movement and Greta Van Fleet, with the keyboard sheen and melodic songwriting of classic stadium rock bands like Foreigner.
‘Promised Land’ is available to order now at earache.com/thekarmaeffect on limited edition vinyl (including signed yellow vinyl), signed CD, alternate artwork and more.
In celebration of ‘Promised Land’, the band will also be holding an album release party at Westerham Brewery, Kent on Saturday 4th May. The evening will feature a special stripped back live set, a Q&A and signing session with the band, as well as a DJ set from the band’s keyboardist Seb Emmins. Spaces can be reserved via earache.com/launchparty
The band will be using the spotlight of their release week to shine a light on causes close to their heart. On Tuesday 7th May from 7pm, the band will participate in a sponsored hot sauce challenge at DB Shack in Basildon, pushing the limits of their spice endurance as seen on the popular YouTube series Hot Ones – including trying a sauce that contains Pepper X, the Guinness World Record-breaking chilli pepper – in aid of raising money for UK male mental health charity Talk Club. Talk Club’s ambassadors include Liam Gallagher, Idles, Tyson Fury and Richard Hammond. The event will be streamed live via The Karma Effect’s Facebook page.
Explaining the rationale behind the event, which takes place during Talk Club’s mental fitness month, frontman Henry Gottelier says: “This really is something quite personal to me, as I have had some pretty hard struggles and I know a few of the boys [in the band] have, too. I think it’s important that we break those stigmas and stereotypes that surround men’s mental health and get young men talking.”
The Karma Effect are accepting donations via JustGiving. All proceeds will be donated to Talk Club in support of their work in running peer-to-peer talking groups, talking therapy sessions and mental fitness training.
Talk Club’s co-founder and co-CEO Ben Akers comments: “Talk Club is all about preventing mental ill health. We do this by asking “How are you? Out of 10?” and promoting mental fitness. Good music makes you feel good. And The Karma Effect certainly does that. So we’re so pleased they are helping to spread the word about our work.”
On Wednesday 8th May, the band will show their support for the independent music community and Grassroots Music Venues by trying to attend at least 10 concerts throughout one night in London. The idea was inspired by the Music Venue Trust’s #TakeAPunt appeal, which encouraged music fans to attend at least one extra show this month to provide Grassroots Music Venues with vital income. The band will be keeping an online journal of the gigs they attend via their social channels, with the aim of helping people discover new independent music, as well as celebrating the treasured venues that they have on their doorstep.
The band comment: “We absolutely love being a part of the independent music community – so we’re going to celebrate it by trying to attend at least 10 gigs in one night (more if we can!) Keep an eye on our socials as we post our gig journals on 8th May, giving you a glimpse into the new music we discover at some of the best music venues in London! Thank you so much to everyone for your support of our new album ‘Promised Land’ so far – we hope we’ve done the indie music community proud!”
Self-releasing their debut album in 2022, the band actually released that record before they’d had a chance to properly play live (due to Covid restrictions). However, they’ve been making up for lost time, playing 11 festivals in 2023 alone, including Planet Rock Radio’s Winter’s End and Steelhouse Festival, as well as enjoying sold-out headline shows across the UK and support slots with UK Top 10 artists like Massive Wagons and Scarlet Rebels, as well as transatlantic label mates The Bites, all the while refining a colossal live sound. The result being that the band captured this lightning in a bottle for the set of highly impressive songs on ‘Promised Land’.
Signed to legendary independent label Earache Records, the band look set to take the next steps to becoming one of the most exciting names in British Rock. With more new music to come plus a plethora of festival dates to come, 2024 looks set to be a huge year for The Karma Effect.
