Back with their 3rd studio album, Weathers, will be releasing ‘Are We Having Fun Yet’ on 05 May 2023. The pop-punk trio from L.A have had an exciting few years since bursting onto the scene back in 2015, with both their last albums being met with critical acclaim and hitting over 28 million Spotify streams.
“It’s meant to be unpredictable,” affirms Boyer. “Since there’s a cohesive sound, you’re essentially living in the same universe, but you’re listening to a bunch of different stories. We dug into how relationships and love can fuck with your head as much as anything else can. We welcomed the changes in our lives, because it was time to evolve—which is also when you should do a new record.”
“We were kids in the two-thousands, so we love over-the-top emotional tunes with a heavier sound,” Boyer goes on. “When we were making the record, we were feeling a bit of rage and sort of doomed. So we asked ourselves, ‘Is this even fun anymore? Or, are we doing this because we’re stuck?’ Since the music encompasses a lot of raw emotion, we decided to be very honest with the title. We want you to walk away feeling like you were heard, and it’s okay to not be okay.” Boyer leaves off, “At the same time, we’re trying to get out of the darkness, because no one wants to be in the dark for too long. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel. When you’re on the floor crying, you’re not the only one. It’s important for the three of us to express ourselves, stick together, and support each other as well as everybody out there who supports us.”
This new album is the next creative step for the band while still holding the values of their influences from the 90’s and 2000’s pop-punk and emo scenes. From the first track “One Of A Kind”, you instantly feel that nostalgia while the track still very much is an original. Not afraid to play with their sound, there’s plenty of synthesisers throughout the album specifically on “She Hate’s Me”. There’s a great upbeat feeling to this track despite the lyrics being about heartbreak. Throughout though the band takes themes of cheating and mental health and put these against super upbeat melodies and “ALL CAPS” is a favourite of mine which does this. There is something about this track that will have you singing along almost immediately and dancing away. The band do have an edgier side to them however with “Where Do I Sign” and “Carsick” which stand out from the rest of the cheerier tracks. For something softer, however, it’s “Goodbye to my Friends” that grabs you with its slower beat and melancholy feel pulling influences from early My Chemical Romance.
From start to finish, this is one of those albums that will find itself on repeat without you even noticing as each track washes over you and has you moving. If you’re looking for something with a little more of a pop sound that still has an edge then this is the album you’re looking for.
