Northampton business park based post-punk quintet Utopia Development Corporation are set to release their debut EP Industrial Area Swimming Centre early next year and kick off by dropping “Repeat”
Written during the very early days of lockdown, Repeat was in actuality the first new material UDC created. Chris having spent much of that time listening to Bremen Nacht by the Fall on repeat had been attempting to discern what it was that made its nine and a half minute run time, a runtime split between ostensibly only two very simple parts, so impossible to skip.
With that an experiment was set in motion, starting with a motorik beat, a creation of two(ish) parts, demands for Alex to bring a baseline to that table that would sit incredibly in the pocket, heavy but danceable, funky with a sharp edge. The guitars were to be sticarto, and direct, becoming the metronome to which the track itself would be built upon. Also a lot of slide guitar for some reason. No idea was to be considered to stupid to be included, all that was left was to get the band together and see if it could even remotely work.
Repeat has been the opening track played at every single Utopia Development Corporation show since its inception. The quintessential UCD track pulling on the band’s roots so hard they have come out the dirt, making way for something new, something more mechanical yet loose.
As with the other tracks for this ep Repeat was recorded at The Lodge Studio in Northampton with engineering and mixing duties falling upon long term collaborator and occasional UDC photographer Rufus Fox and with mastering provided by industry stalwart Stephen Kerrison.
