TILLY releases her hard edged, punk-rock, & pop fused debut single ‘Best Break Up Ever’ on all digital platforms now, which will connect with anyone who’s ever felt like a misfit. “I struggled for a long time with my identity and who I was,” she says today. “I knew I wasn’t like other kids at my school. I’m a left-of-centre kind of person, and I stuck out like a sore thumb. Lots of them would look at me and think, ‘She’s weird…’ and that led to me being bullied for a while.” A breakout teen antihero, an edgy, refreshing, unorthodox counter to the typical pop artist, her steadfast mantra is all about empowerment.
“It’s not just about me, it’s about anyone who has had a break up of any kind that feels like the world is ending, but it turns out to be the best thing that could have happened!” exclaims TILLY with a beaming contagious smile. “There’s a message in it for all, that you can find a positive in any negative situation ‘a four-leaf clover’ – mental health is super important to me. I discovered myself in a way I never had before, I learned that I didn’t need these people in my life. I decided I wasn’t going to take it any more. So I stood up to them – ‘You know, what you’re doing is wrong, and it is your loss.’”
Having grown up living above local Feathers music venue in the unassuming city of Lichfield, 15 miles north of the rock’n’roll epicentre of Birmingham UK, it’s little surprise that the charismatic 17 year old cannot remember a time when music was not the dominant fixture in her life. With a ‘60s and ’70s loving dad, and an older brother obsessed with the punk and emo of the 2000s, her musical education was both thorough and varied, making her a home-schooled student of classic songwriters such as David Bowie and The Beatles as well as of modern-day iconic frontmen like Slipknot’s Corey Taylor and Ghost’s Tobias Forge during field trips to gigs and the legendary Download festival. “People ask me what growing up around so much music was like, and I don’t know how to answer it,” she laughs of a life soundtracked by the downstairs hum of amps and applause of a crowd. “I’ve never known any differently.”
The effervescent, striking and upbeat accompanying video (watch & subscribe HERE) was primarily shot at Bring Me The Horizon’s studio Church Temple of Fun embodying the message of the song and TILLY’s high-energy engaging live performance. “We had SO much fun shooting in such a cool venue! Kicking about and setting fire to teddy bears with one of my best friends and the guys…it’s a celebration of saying, ‘I’m going to live my life how I want, and become the person I want to be.”
Newly signed to Base Culture Music Group/SONY Orchard and produced by multi-platinum producer Mike Krompass (Nelly Furtado, Smash Mouth) and mastered by Justin Shturtz (Paramore, Breaking Benjamin), TILLY isn’t just the opposition of a glossy, sugary pop image…she shatters it, with her stabbing hooks, attitude and artistic sincerity. ‘Best Break Up Ever’ is her jubilant defiant anthem; “I’m such a giving person, and so passionate about this, that whatever people want – whether it’s just to discover some good music to listen to, or to find a friend and a community that they really need in their life, I’m ready for them. I’m ready for it all.”
