Thundermother – The Dirty & Divine Tour 2025
The Garage, Islington, London
With Cobra Spell & Vulvarine in Support.
The Garage, Islington has a capacity of 600. What we have in store are three bands that will bring back memories for many fans. The first band to come on stage, Vulvarine from Vienna, Austria. The vocalist’s stage outfit was very much a 1980s look, the black and white striped spandex legging, metal rivet belt hanging loose on the waist, short leather waistcoat and t-shirt with fishnet stockings covering the arms. The rest of the band presented themselves equally with a 1980’s look including the hairstyles, with sleeveless Heavy Metal tops and tight leggings or jeans. The singer’s mic stand caught my attention, with impaled skulls. From the look of the music, it did feel like being teleported back in time to a 1980’s gig. The music fit the era, with easy-going Heavy Rock / Metal riffs and solos. It was lively, but not intense. The singer, Suzy Q, did a good job leading the band, especially when she jumped off the stage for a short time to join in with the fans while she sang. This band was a good opener for the night, close to a 30-minute set.

Next was a recognisable band Cobra Spell, a band put together by Sonia Anubis, who used to perform with Burning Witches. There were 3 original members on stage: Sonia Anubis on guitar, Kristina Vega on vocals, and Hale Naphtha on drums. We had the live performers of Bel Mena on bass and Adri Funerailles on guitar. Cobra Spell members came on stage, with a 1980’s Shock Rock look, which you saw with the band Wasp back in the 1980’s. They had leather bondage straps and wristbands, with chains. Adri Funerailles wears a spandex costume and Sonia wears a latex body suit with fishnets. Cobra Spell made an effort in the presentation. The band did their best in their performance on a small stage, setting off with a popular track The Devil Inside of Me, from the album 666 on Napalm Records. Straight away the band were headbanging, swinging their guitars around. Lead singer Kristina Vega scans the front row and the rest of the crowd while she sings, presenting vocal power and head up high with the high notes with Sonia swinging her hair beside her. It was good to see backing vocals from guitarists to the drummer, making the performance vocally very engaging. The movement from the band was constant. As the performance progressed to more tracks from their latest album: Satan Is A Woman and S.E.X. It felt that Cobra Spell was the main band of the night. Sonia really enjoyed showing off her solos with a lot of energy. Adri Funerailles and Bel Mena both on the other side of the stage, performed well, with the restricted stage space. Love Crime, Warrior From Hell, and Addicted To The Night were the last tracks they performed for the evening. The highlight of the set was the high-performance energy from Sonia and Kristina. There was no boring moment throughout this set. It was full power and alive.

Finally, it was time for the main act, Thundermother from Sweden, with Linnéa Vikström, singer/guitar, Filippana Nassil guitar, Majsan Lindberg bass and Joan Massing drummer, who presented a good 20-song set list. Their songs present a classic Hard Rock sound, with mid-tempo riffs, easy to follow. They came on stage with the dressed-down Rock look, with tight leggings, trainers, sleeveless t-shirts and denim. It was a mellow performance after the high-energy set from Cobra Spell. Thundermother ladies would perform synchronised guitar movements together, swinging together their mighty axes. It was great to see Majsan Lindberg bass player, pointing her bass guitar towards me when she was playing, as a way of appreciation to the front row audience. The singer Linnéa Vikström would be on stage one moment then jump towards the fans in the front, then you would see her right of the back of the venue. Linnéa would come back on stage with a huge container of beer sharing with the other band members, managing not to spill any while performing. With a song-fulfilling set, the band really presented a wide range of tracks from old to new. A strong performance for Hard Rock fans.
