The Ugly Guys are Still Kickin’ with A Best Of, So Far…
After twenty two years and seven albums together, Southend-based purveyors of Cosmic Americana Music, The Ugly Guys are to release a ‘Best Of’ album collecting some of their favourite tracks so far.
The new album Still Kickin’ is released on CD and digital platforms, 18th April 2025 through Conquest Music.
Lead singer, Paul Shuttleworth says “So, seven albums behind us, with many now unavailable on CD, it seems a good time to offer you a personal selection of tracks from the past. As an appetiser for the future, also included is The Ugly Guys version of Mickey Jupp’s ‘I Should Be Loving This’, which will appear on the next album.”
Two years on from the celebrated Cover Your Tracks album, Still Kickin’ brings us 17 great songs that have been given a special country blues interpretation by The Ugly Guys.
As well as original Ugly Guys songs, there’s a fun arrangement of Paul Shuttleworth & Vic Collins old outfit, the Kursaal Flyers classic hit, ‘Little Does She Know’. Adele, Bob Dylan & Toby Keith also get an Ugly Guys makeover to make Still Kickin’ an engaging, entertaining, and eclectic set.

The founder members of The Ugly Guys — Paul Shuttleworth and Vic Collins — have been making music together since 1969, when they founded one of England’s first country rock bands Cow Pie. Paul and Vic went on to form The Kursaal Flyers in 1972 and were an integral part of the ‘Pub Rock’ scene that was flourishing in the UK at that time. The Kursaals were one of the few bands to break out of the pub rock scene when in 1977 they enjoyed a hit single with their Phil Spectoresque pastiche ‘Little Does She Know’.
Fast forward to 2003, when a chance meeting led Paul and Vic to explore the prospect of forming a new band to play the cosmic country music, they both loved. A call to guitarist and multi-instrumentalist Steve Oliver quickly formed the nucleus of the new band, which they named The Ugly Guys, taking the moniker from a much-loved Kursaal Flyers song.
