Any band that reaches their 20th anniversary and is still as strong as ever has defied the odds, making that landmark something to celebrate. And The Subways are pulling out all the stops in their 20th year together by reinventing old favourites, releasing the ‘When I’m With You’ compilation on October 17th, and playing a sprawling ‘The Subways For Eternity’ headline tour in the autumn. Now The Subways continue to look back while planning a bright future as they share a new version of fan favourite and live staple ‘With You’.

Originally just the band’s third single and a Top 30 hit, ‘With You’ is a compelling example of how some of The Subways’ songs have evolved every time. Its previous garage-rock intensity has been replaced by a song of two-halves: an atmospheric, stripped-back opening inspired huge hands-in-the-air reactions at big festivals and headline gigs, before it erupts into life and detonates the mosh-pit. Lyrically, its plaintive, positive message sweetly encapsulates the fan community and their connection with the band.
Charlotte Cooper says, “In recent years we have been playing this version of ‘With You’ in the live set. It’s become one of our favourite moments in the show, we love sharing singing the lyrics with everyone in the crowd. We thought it would be really cool to celebrate 20 years of the song by recording this version – we hope you enjoy reminiscing with us!”
Billy Lunn adds, “Contrary to how the song has always been played these last 20 years, which is with high intensity, we’ve recently used With You as a moment to thank the fans for the dedication to the band, playing it slower and quieter so we can all take a few minutes to reflect. It’s such a sweet section of the set, and so we wanted to re-record it for everyone to enjoy it this way at home too!”

And Camille Phillips jokes, “I prefer playing the one with more drums in it, but this one is alright.”
Structured like a set list, ‘When I’m With You’ is also an all-killer no-filler journey through The Subways’ story. Bookended by two of their most iconic moments, ‘Oh Yeah’ and ‘Rock & Roll Queen’, the record takes in numerous other fan favourites and highlights from their entire career such as  ‘I Want To Hear What You’ve Got To Say’‘We Don’t Need Money To Have A Good Time’, ‘Kalifornia’ and ‘You Kill My Cool’.
Those songs have taken The Subways across the globe, playing 1000+ gigs in forty countries including shows with Foo Fighters and AC/DC, onto several big US late night shows, soundtracking major Rimmel / Kate Moss ad campaigns, and performing in Guy Ritchie’s ‘RocknRolla’ and the iconic teen drama ‘The OC’. But best of all, twenty years in and there’s still clearly so much yet to be written in The Subways’ tale.
‘When I’m With You’ is available to pre-order HERE, with physical products coming in the shape of double white-and-black marbled vinyl with a signed insert, double red-vinyl and CD.
This summer has seen The Subways focus on select festival dates: a handful of sets in Germany, a headline set at Y NOT?’s Giant Squid stage, and a Hertfordshire homecoming at Harlow Sunset SessionsThe Subways’ 20th anniversary celebrations continue in November through to the end of the year as they take ‘The Subways For Eternity’ tour across the UK and into Europe.
