They thought it was all over but The Spitfires roared through their first run of comeback tour dates over the last two months and now the reconstructed, nu-mod four-piece rolls again, announcing a new album and October UK Tour. It’s not a party without loud music and the band releases their latest single, Where Did We Go Wrong? to celebrate the news that the band’s sixth album, MKII, is to be released with Bellevue Music Recordings on Fri 3 October 2025.
Reuniting with old friends to tell a brand-new story over a run of springtime gigs that got underway on familiar territory at Bedford’s Esquires in April, the fresh-look/same energy Spitfires next set of dates kick off this autumn. Opening with their first visit to Manchester in over six years, the band returns to the city’s modern classic Gorilla venue on Fri 10 October ahead of a further five dates that take in Cambridge, Brighton, Nottingham, Newcastle and Bristol. Nourished by their recent close contact with fans, new and old, it seems unlikely that The Spitfires will be finished once that tour draws to a close.
Led by singer and songwriter, Billy Sullivan, The Spitfires’ emergence in 2015 with single, 4am, was followed by a blaze of hype that led them into their debut album, Response. Their amicable split in 2022 sent Sullivan into a period of reflection and restorative creativity, finally emerging with a new line-up and the band’s first new music in three years, Better The Devil You Know in April. The news that MKII, a new album of 11-tracks, is set for release this autumn puts wind under both the band and their loyal fanbase’s wings.
Sullivan sets the scene for the album by saying:“It sounds refreshed and confident, ballsy but doesn’t mind showing a softer side and being reflective too. For me it’s not a continuation of The Spitfires back catalogue, it’s very much the start of a new chapter. I’m incredibly proud, after all these years, to be talking about a new body of work which excites me and inspires me more than ever.”
Before the story continues, The Spitfires, completed by Liam Taylor (guitar), Sam Dimond (bass) and Euan Crawford-McKee (drums), go back to face the full stop of a faded romance on Where Did We Go Wrong? Only the album’s second single, it already speaks of a band infectiously combining reflective and relatable lyricism with a supercharged, classic guitar pop sensibility.
“This particular song tells a story of commitment issues,” adds Sullivan.“Those times when we feel forced into letting loved ones go, or surrender them without fight, and relationships break down. ‘Where Did We Go Wrong?’ is a song that sums up getting out of the way instead of addressing the fact of getting scared, whether that’s being hurt ourselves or hurting the other person.”
Having five albums’ worth of songs to choose from, as well as airing unheard songs from MKII, The Spitfires set-list swells with sounds as distinct to today’s indie scene as the past that has inspired Sullivan, including The Clash, Elvis Costello and The Attractions and The Specials. Wasting no time, straight off the back of their most recent dates, including a hugely memorable SOLD-OUT show at Koko in Camden, The Spitfires announce their next run of UK Tour dates as follows:
MKII will be available on CD, digital and limited edition 12” vinyl formats, with the latter in three different colour variants (red, blue and yellow). The first 200 of each colour fully signed by the band. It arrives having been recorded at studios in Leeds, Manchester and Chelmsford after Sullivan gathered a new band of brothers to take the band’s good name into a new era. With more new music set to be revealed and heighten anticipation further before the summer, The Spitfires have confirmed the track listing for the album as:
1. The Great Divide! 2. Better The Devil You Know 3. I’ll Never 4. Let Me Tell ‘Ya 5. Where Did We Go Wrong? 6. (Life Is) A Losing Game 7. A Man Out Of Time 8. Like They Used To 9. The Writing’s On The Wall 10. I Can’t Keep This Up 11. Grateful
The release of Better The Devil You Know, a song with timely anti-war sentiments, hit streaming services at the same time as a super-limited 7” vinyl of just 300 copies became available for pre-order. With first 150 fully signed by the band, the collectible featured a physical release-only B-side, A Man Out Of Time (Le SuperHomard Remix).
