Following their two self-released EPs – MATTER & CARE – in the last 12 months, punk quartet THE NONE are back with their ferocious new 7” release. Limited to a run of 250 hand-numbered vinyl, the single is formed of first cut ‘At Hope’ and B-side ‘In Civic Pride’ and comes June 20th on ZENNOR Records.

“To make a living, you’ve got to give in,” band leader Kai Whyte howls on the blistering ‘At Hope’. A slicing bite of social commentary, the track wouldn’t sound out of place on an early Touch and Go or Dischord release, yet it feels acutely progressive in its sentiment. A mixture that transcends the influence of their musical predecessors, the track draws from the cultural climate of today. Listen to ‘At Hope’ HERE & watch the video HERE.

“When naming the song, we were discussing various terms related to poverty. In particular, the ridiculous policy-speak used to sanitise and defang the issue. ‘Economic deprivation’, ‘underprivileged’, ‘economically disadvantaged’ etc.,” explains the band.

“Gordon came across an article about a US senator who wanted to replace the term ‘at risk’ – used to describe poor children – with ‘at hope’. This perfectly encapsulates a toxic neoliberal attitude that centres the problems of poverty on the people experiencing it. The idea that all these kids need is a bit of positivity to be rich and happy is at best delusional and patronising, and at worst incredibly harmful.”

Directed by Tim Mobbs and shot in Birmingham, the video to accompany ‘At Hope’ is a stark realisation of the city’s current struggle with the council and sheds light on the constant working class battle against power.

“Birmingham’s refuse workers have been on strike since January, resulting in overflowing bins and mountains of trash accumulating across the city,” vocalist Kai says of the video.

“The strike began after the council scrapped a crucial safety role designed to protect both workers and the public. As a result, hundreds of workers are now facing significant pay cuts and threats to their wellbeing. ‘At Hope’ is about growing up skint and how those of us on the breadline are treated by those who have power. Capturing the current situation in Brum seemed fitting for this track.”

Following their debut shows in February 2024, THE NONE have quickly built a reputation as a formidable live band – racking up shows with the likes of Mannequin Pussy, Les Savy Fav, Metz and The Jesus Lizard. Kicking off at The Great Escape Festival, where the band play the BBC 6 Music Stage (Paganini Ballroom @ 20:15 on Thursday May 15th), they are now gearing up for a string of festival appearances over the summer, followed by tour dates later in the year.

Formed of bassist Gordon Moakes (Bloc Party, Young Legionnaire), vocalist Kai Whyte (Blue Ruth, Youth Man), guitarist Jim Beck (Cassels) and drummer Chris Francombe (Frauds), THE NONE’s music is a stark collision of unfiltered noise and striking melody. Equal parts chaos and craft, their sound channels the edges of post-hardcore with the weight of something more introspective.
