THE KOOKS AND LOVELYTHEBAND RELEASE VIDEO FOR VIRAL TIKTOK SENSATION ‘JEANIE’ – FEATURING LOLA LENG TAYLOR
OUT NOW
The Kooks and lovelytheband have released a video for their sensational track ‘Jeanie’, which has gone viral on TikTok since its release last month. Watch here.
The collaboration has been used to soundtrack more than 225K videos on the social media platform, with users embracing its empowering lyrics: “She can live high, she can live low, doesn’t really matter, you know she’s not your average. Yeah she’s a legend, knows fame is deception. She’s running circles around the world.”
Featuring in the video, alongside Luke Pritchard and Mitchy Collins, is musician and actor Lola Leng Taylor, daughter of Queen drummer Roger Taylor. The stylized, black-and-white shoot sees each dancing to the tune, with a subtle tribute to a silver screen legend.
On working with Lola, Luke says: “Lola is a real rockstar. My favourite new haunt is Lovers Lane on Portobello, and the beautiful folk there lent us an incredible vintage Roberto Cavalli dress which Lola danced around in. We put in a little nod to Bridget Bardot by wrapping Lola in the flag – it’s been amazing to have so many people who draw from the same influences as me in, and making, our videos.”
“Jeanie is a song for all the unsung heroes,” Luke continues. “It was originally written on a trip to LA with the super talented producer Jimmy Duval, I had wanted to develop my story telling lyrics. I had an image of a woman living a life that beat the odds of her upbringing. In celebrity culture we neglect the people who don’t ask for praise and appreciation. But this song is for them. I was so happy when Mitch from lovelytheband got in touch after Jimmy played it to him and we decided to collaborate on the track, they brought so much to it and we’re very excited it’s now out in the world.”
The song is a collaboration between The Kooks and lovelytheband – indie pioneers from either side of the Atlantic. Opening with a minimalist pop groove and low-key synths, the tune is driven by the alternating vocals of singers Luke Pritchard and Mitchy Collins, with a guitar solo from Hugh Harris.
It debuted on the Billboard Top 50 Tik Tok Songs chart at #27 and has enjoyed playlist spots including Apple Breaking Alternative, Apple Best New Music and Pandora’s Alt Pop station cover.
Produced by Jimmy Duval, the song teases the return of The Kooks, and is a progression from the electro-pop found on their 2022 album, 10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark. For lovelytheband, this is their first new music since August, when they released their sweeping and anthemic self-titled fourth album, which included radio hit ‘nice to know you’.
The Los Angeles-based lovelytheband – Mitchy Collins (vocals), Jordan Greenwold (guitar), Sam Price (drums) – found almost immediate success in 2017 with the release of their heartfelt debut single, ‘broken’, which became the longest charting alternative rock record in Billboard history in the US.
Formed in Brighton, The Kooks – made up of Luke Pritchard (vocals, guitar), Hugh Harris (guitar, synths, bass) and Alexis Nunez (drums) – emerged as one of the leading lights of the 2000s UK indie scene. Debut album Inside In/Inside Out (2016) has sold more than two million copies and set them on a course for stardom over nearly two decades.
About The Kooks
The Kooks were at the forefront of the UK’s 2000s indie revival, a scene looking forwards after the passing of the Britpop era. Debut album Inside In/Inside Out sold more than 2m copies and the band won Best UK and Ireland Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2006. The single ‘She Moves in Her Own Way’ was nominated for best single at the Brit Awards.
But this was not a one-hit wonder, with follow up Konk also hitting the number one spot. Songs such as ‘Naive’, ‘Seaside’ and ‘…Junk Of The Heart (Happy)’ continue to win new fans.
The band’s inspirations are wide, from the impact of the likes of Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones on singer Luke Pritchard, to multi-instrumentalist Hugh Harris’s love of soul and opera.
During 18 years together, they have released six studio albums, the latest of which was 2022’s 10 Tracks to Echo in the Dark – yet another leap forward in the maturing of the band.
