Your Feathers Up’ is a new single from The Coral Sea, the moniker of California based singer-songwriter Rey Villalobos, written about being down and out in Santa Barbara, and featuring Dave Depper of Death Cab for Cutie on bass guitar and synth and long-term collaborator John Morgan Askew (M. Ward, She & Him, Alela Diane, Califone, Neko Case) on production.

Your Feathers Up’ is vitriolic and fast paced, blending deep guitar riffs recalling the fervent songs of Arcade Fire, with a lush, dreamier Americana hue. It tells the tale of Villalobos’ experience of living out of his car and on the fringes of life. As he expands “I was floating around the city at the time, in a blurry dream state, contemplating all the time spent and wasted on imposters,”encapsulated perfectly in the lyrics “I am feeling lost and weighted, superficially unrelated, fix me up I’m tired of waiting I’m jaded ugly so outdated, I’m gone, I’m gone.”

The accompanying video features The Coral Sea moving about the city, portraying both the loneliness and the natural beauty of the laid-back Santa Barbara, shot, directed, and edited by Christian Smith.

‘Your Feathers Up’ is taken from The Coral Sea’s new album Golden Planet Sky which blends chamber-pop, indie-folk, and indie-rock to a devastatingly beautiful effect, produced by John Morgan Askew and featuring guest musicians Ji Tanzer (Blue Cranes) on drums, Kelly Pratt (Father John Misty, Beirut, David Byrne/St. Vincent) on horns and woodwinds, and Dave Depper (guitar, synths, bass).

Rey Villalobos is a Los Angeles native, but his family originates from México and Italy. He fell in love with music via Chopin Nocturnes while taking piano lessons and still considers the nocturnes an influence today, before beginning his career in music as a drummer playing in bands whilst living in between Los Angeles and Portland Oregon. He next landed on the central coast of California, put the drumming aside and began writing on an old classical guitar and singing. He has released albums under the monikers The Coral Sea and House of Wolves including a debut album ‘Volcano and Heart’ and three chamber pop indie releases, followed by three slow core noir folk albums on French and Spanish boutique labels. He has toured mainland Europe extensively.

‘Your Feathers Up’ is out today as a digital single with The Coral Sea’s long player Golden Planet Sky follows on 20 January 2023 via Villalobos’ artist-run label Trees They Move.
