“Canberra’s young pop-punks come of age with a debut album showing their softer side” – The Observer (One to Watch) “There are bright, punchy flavours of Elastica and Garbage, along with a sizeable amount of Riot Grrrl DNA” – Classic Rock “There’s so much fun on this record, a joy of performing” – NARC ★★★★ “a stunning debut which cements their personality.” – CLASH “Teen Jesus’ music emanates an unforced exhilaration at singing out their truth, and has the tunes to carry it off.” – The Arts Desk “Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers have nailed their debut album… a belter from start to finish.” – The AU Review ★★★★★ “I Love You has plenty of the hard-hitting anthems the band has forged its identity around, but there’s also pleasing depth, variety and maturity to the slower burning tunes that are executed with conviction and a whole lot of heart.” – Rolling Stone AU ★★★★

Rapidly-rising punk rock stars Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers are thrilled to today unveil their long-awaited debut album ‘I Love You’, which is out now via Domestic La La. Being released to a slew of positive reviews internationally, high rotation on radio and with the band already exceeding 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify, ‘I Love You’ – which features their singles ‘Salt’ ft. The Grogans, ‘I Used To Be Fun’, ‘Never Saw It Coming’ and the “ripping” ‘Lights Out’ – sees the four piece step into fresh sonic territory to create an expansive debut well beyond their years. Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers are currently on the road across so-called-Australia, touring with DMA’s before their national ‘I Love You’ headline tour later this month. They will close out the year with a very special last live show for guitarist Scarlett McKahey, supporting Foo Fighters in Naarm/Melbourne on 04 December. The band have also just been announced as main support to The Vaccines across Europe and the UK in Jan / Feb 2024, having captivated audiences at The Great Escape and their debut London headline shows earlier this year. The strengths of the four members of Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers shine through across the 12 tracks on ‘I Love You’; four distinct personalities with a core dynamic based on a shared love for each other’s work ethic and talent, making the road to their debut album not just exciting, but intriguing. Working with producer Oscar Dawson, each member takes lead songwriting duties at varying points on the record, taking the blistering impact of their earlier releases and shifting to toy with softness and ease on bubblegum love songs with an underside like ‘I Love You’, ‘Salt’ (ft. The Grogans) and the vibe-setting ‘Toe Bone’, while still staying true to their punk rock roots on ‘I Don’t Want It’, ‘Lights Out’, ‘Treat Me Better’. Where their debut EP ‘Pretty Good For A Girl Band’ introduced listeners to the band’s potential, ‘I Love You’ is definitive: Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers are more than the Australian music industry buzz has hinted towards: they are pure joy, rage, and euphoria, delivered with precision and heart. Self-described perfectionists, it was on the road to their debut album that the band broke down the walls they realised they’d built up themselves, learning to trust the process and recognise that there was beauty in the grit; a mistake could sometimes blossom into a strong new idea for a song. “Every time one of us would get a little bit antsy, we’d have to be like, “It’s okay! It’s fine!”” guitarist Scarlett McKahey says. The trust the band has developed within themselves to step up and out with new material allowed them to shed any pressures they’d previously put on themselves to exceed the expectations of anyone else outside their circle. Scarlett McKahey continues, “Being non-males in the industry, and because we’re all quite young as well, we all feel the need to prove ourselves a lot. In other recording sessions, everyone we have recorded with has been amazing…if I didn’t get something in the first take, I’d be embarrassed, because I felt like I needed to prove that I deserved a spot in this industry. This time, we had to totally trust the process and know that it’s not a reflection on you if you don’t get it done.” And trust the process they did. ‘I Love You’ showcases the breadth of Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers’ craft – never to be pigeonholed, and definitely never underestimated. Formed during high school in their hometown of Ngunnawal/Canberra in 2015, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers – Anna Ryan (they/them; vocals/guitar), Scarlett McKahey (she/her; guitar/vocals), Jaida Stephenson (she/her; bass) and Neve van Boxsel (she/her; drums) – channel Riot Grrrl-era energy with a 2023 spin and are the most natural, confident and damn likeable punk-rockers you’ll meet. Their AIR Award-winning debut EP ‘Pretty Good For A Girl Band’ (Best Independent Punk Album or EP; 2022) features ‘Girl Sports’ which hit #55 on this year’s triple j Hottest 100 and saw praise from The Guardian, triple j, frankie, The AU Review, Music Feeds, The Music and Kill Your Stereo, cover stars on Spotify and Apple Music, with ‘AHHHH!’ taking the #117 spot on the Hottest 200 countdown last year. Now based across Dharawal Country/Wollongong, Ngunnawal/Canberra, and Naarm/Melbourne, the band have graduated into an astute group of early twenty-somethings – just as concerned about issues facing today’s women, non-binary people and young people everywhere as they are with their loud and completely cool punk rock sound.
