STEPHEN MCCAFFERTY
‘REASON TO RUN’
NEW SINGLE OUT 26/3/25

Photo credit: Bas Van TuijlStephen’s musical journey began with his gran’s old stereo and his mum’s vinyl and cassette collection. Influenced by artists like David Bowie, The Cranberries, and The Beatles, Stephen developed a love for music that laid the foundation for his future song-writing. Combining introspective lyrics with anthemic choruses, Stephen draws inspiration from classic 20th-century song-writing, adding depth with existential themes influenced by literature and culture.Stephen’s path was marked by resilience. In his late teens and early twenties, he led a nomadic life across Scotland, sofa-surfing, sleeping in cars, wheelbarrows, and even a digger. His pivotal decision to move to Edinburgh and declare himself homeless led to a transformative year in a shelter, where he wrote songs that would gain national attention and three XFM Breakout tracks of the week with his band, Return To The Sun. Performing extensively with bands like Beautiful By Design and Return To The Sun, Stephen graced stages at festivals such as The Isle of Wight and received airplay on BBC Introducing
.After taking a break to reflect and refocus, Stephen returned to his musical roots with a renewed vision, channelling his diverse influences into crafting songs that truly resonate with him. Stephen kicked off 2025 with a release that led Mark McNally (Postcards From The Underground) to call him “a man that keeps putting out tremendous singles.” Now, he’s back with his 7th single and second of the year, ‘Reason To Run’. With all his 2025 singles already recorded, Stephen is shifting focus to marketing, live shows, and music videos -ensuring a big year ahead.

“Reason To Run came to life the morning after a night of drinking Norwegian whiskey, courtesy of a friend over visiting. That whiskey led to a dream where I watched a pile of burning books – my favourite one resting on top. The song wrestles with the search for meaning, the desire to believe in something, and the doubt that keeps belief just out of reach. The first verse explores the fruitless intellectual pursuit of answers, while the second recalls a psychedelic experience in Amsterdam, where I found myself confronting my own death.” – Stephen McCafferty
