Today, Spanish Love Songs announce their forthcoming EP, A Brief Intermission in the Flattening of Time, out everywhere 21st November 2025 via Pure Noise Records. Furthermore, they share two new singles “Cocaine and Lexapro” ft. Kevin Devine and “Berlin” ft. Tigers Jaw.
“Cocaine and Lexapro” is the heart-wrenching answer to “Beer & Nyquil (Hold It Together)” off of 2018’s Schmaltz. It addresses all the same fears of feeling stuck and frustrations about the non-linearity of life, but through a newer, matured lens.
“I’ve been trying to work with Kevin for a while now,” shares frontman and guitarist Dylan Slocum. “We have a good number of mutual friends but had never met up until this. The reasoning was simple — our band doesn’t exist without Kevin Devine, so when he agreed to sing on a song, he got to sing on a song. He took what I had demoed as an angry, contrarian second verse and turned it into something delicate and full of pathos. It absolutely floored me the first time I heard his vocal tracks dropped in.”

Second offering “Berlin” is what Slocum calls “a spy movie of a love song.” A moody, darkly romantic track, it tells the tale of a partner whose questionable past keeps coming back to haunt the both of you.
“Tigers Jaw is another band that we love dearly and had somehow never met despite having friends in common,” explains Slocum. “When we announced the Common Thread tour this year and saw they were on the bill, we figured we’d take a shot and asked if they’d be interested to sing on our weird song. At first, we thought only Ben was tracking, but when we received the track back and heard Brianna doing the harmonies we absolutely lost our mind. It’s the Tigers Jaw thing we love on an SLS song. That feeling is one of the core reasons we even toyed with the idea of having features, and in that moment made the entire experiment worth it.”

A Brief Intermission in the Flattening of Time serves as the follow-up to the band’s 2025 No Joy Sessions and marks their first new music since 2023’s No Joy. The EP can be described best as a reflective pause, as Spanish Love Songs both pull from their past and look ahead to the uncertain future. From spontaneous studio sessions with producer Arun Bali and shaped by collaborations with friends, each track is a raw, emotionally charged sonic snapshot that grapples with our own messy existences.
The EP stands apart as its own self-contained world, a cul-de-sac of sorts in the band’s evolving career. There’s a looseness and honesty in the songs that could only come from having no plan, just an acoustic guitar, a mic, and the willingness to see where things might go. It’s an intermission, yes – but one that ended up meaning a lot more than expected.

Since 2013, the LA-formed indie-punk quintet SPANISH LOVE SONGS have made hay on the backs of a string of beloved albums – 2015’s Giant Sings The Blues, 2018’s Schmaltz, 2020’s Brave Faces Everyone and 2023’s No Joy – lauded by critics and fans alike for their richly personal, no-holds-barred lyricism awash in existential dread, hyper-personal cultural ruminations and attempts to answer life’s big questions.
