Yorkshire. Home of White Roses, infamous puddings, unbeatable tea, and yes, one of SKINNY LISTER’s favourite boats.

Inspired by a pleasure cruiser that goes by the name of the “Yorkshire Belle”, their latest single is a fitting tribute to this most worthy of vessels.

Since the 1940s, The Yorkshire Belle has been a familiar site in the harbour of the East Yorkshire seaside town of Bridlington. Well known by locals and admired by tourists, during the summer months it will take hundreds of holidaymakers, along the coast out to Flamborough Head (and back) on a leisurely one hour cruise. Its history goes back even further too, with the boat being a rebuild of an original vessel commandeered for use in WWII, which was sunk by a mine in the River Humber near Hull, with all of its crew sadly lost.

While Bridlington has seen some changes over the years – the Yorkshire Belle remains a reassuring constant. Reminiscent in many ways of Skinny Lister, who have long been a flagship component of the contemporary folk/punk scene, the boat has long anchored a place in their hearts and was an obvious subject choice for their buoyant new single.

Explaining why the story of the “Yorkshire Belle” has resonated with the band, Dan Heptinstall says:

“Having written shanty style tracks about The Amsterdam, and the famous Lynmouth overland lifeboat rescue – ’13 Miles’ on our previous two albums, it was nice to write about something very close to home and close to my heart. My childhood memories are infused with warm summer memories of the Yorkshire Belle, both as a passenger, and of seeing it out at sea heading to and from Flamborough. The boat has helped create memories for thousands of people across many generations, and continues to do so – nearly 80 years after it was brought into service.”

Saluting this seaworthy sensation in style, Skinny Lister have picked the vessel to launch their new album ‘Songs From The Yonder’ aboard its decks on the day of its release (9th May 2025).

“It seemed like the perfect choice to officially launch our new album ‘Songs From The Yonder’ on the Yorkshire Belle, and having spoken to the skipper Pete, who’s owned and operated the boat since 1982, it was a pleasure to get that scheduled-in for album launch day. It was also great to have it sell out in just a couple of days. Should be an evening to remember!”

Support on the day will come from esteemed folk musician Jim Eldon, who has long been associated with the boat and provided musical entertainment with his voice and fiddle upon the vessel for many years, before retiring.

“It’s a real treat to confirm that Jim will be joining us to get the evening underway with his salty tales of the Yorkshire Belle and the area” adds Dan.

New single “Yorkshire Belle” follows the fervent “Plough On”, and swaggering drinking song “Set Us Straight” (revealed at the end of last year), with all three tracks due to appear on the highly anticipated new album ‘Songs From The Yonder’. Picking up where the acclaimed ‘Shanty Punk’ left off, their seventh studio album will find the band revelling in their nostalgic touchstones, while facing the future with a wide eyed sense of optimism and a warming reverence for what has been. With plenty of harks back to their folk roots and some more tender touches too, longstanding fans will be enamoured to hear that those classic Skinny themes of drinking, travelling, the sea and ploughing on in the face of adversity, are still hoisted high on the band’s flagpole throughout this latest outing.

Written and recorded by Skinny Lister, the record was mastered at Abbey Road Studios by Frank Arkwright. Produced and mixed by Dan Heptinstall, its core tracks were recorded live, and left unedited, in an attempt to capture a ferocious live energy.

A glorious, riotous mix of chest-thumping anthems, shanty sing-a-longs and folk/punk classics, tempered by a some of the most tender and reflective songs the band have penned yet; ‘Songs From The Yonder’ will be released on 9th May 2025, via Xtra Mile Recordings, on coloured vinyl, CD and digital.

*****

Since 2009, Skinny Lister have been at the forefront of first-rate folk/punk in the UK. Making waves with the irrepressible energy of their debut album ‘Forge and Flagon’ in 2012, the London-formed crew went on to sign with Xtra Mile Recordings for the release of their classic second album ‘Down On Deptford Broadway’ (2014) and so beginning a partnership that has birthed a further four records with the label including ‘The Devil, The Heart, The Fight’ (2016), ‘The Story Is…’ (2019), ‘A Matter Of Life & Love’ (2021), and most recently ‘Shanty Punk’.

Given its mastering polish at the iconic Abbey Road Studios by Frank Arkwright, their last effort ‘Shanty Punk’ saw the band delivering their most autobiographical and arguably most definitive Skinny Lister album yet. A concept album all about the myths and madness that have have defined Skinny Lister themselves, it was warmly received by The Morning Star who praised in a 5* review “If you’re feeling out of sorts and in need of festive cheering up, the exuberant Deptford sextet Skinny Lister are the remedy, the balm that no festive season can do without. Ever.”, whilst RNR Magazine hailed the record as “very good…raucous!” (4*).

As the band’s career continues to see them passing the growing flagon of their experiences with every album and tour. They’ve led an endless parade gathering fans old and new, from the respected folk circuit to the riotous Download Festival, igniting pogoing mosh-pits at each. Over the past ten years they’ve travelled from rain-soaked London to the vast arteries of the USA, upgrading from narrow boat to Salty Dog Cruise, played huge tours across Europe and North America and headlined themselves across festivals, sweatboxes and ever-larger venues. Performing with some of music’s most tenacious live acts from Dropkick Murphys to Frank Turner, Boy George to Beans on Toast to The Bouncing Souls, not to mention reigniting their US fanbase with an epic tour across America with Flogging Molly in 2023; Skinny Lister’s formidable live rep more than proceeds them.

And now with the tantalising promise of some potential new material on the horizon, catch Skinny Lister touring the tunes of new album ‘Songs From The Yonder’ at a venue near you this year.
