About Showoff: Based out of Chicago, Illinois, Showoff creates electrifying, powerhouse music that has shaped generations. The band gravitates towards a fun-loving high-energy radiating a refreshing atmosphere.
Formed in the late 1990s, this iconic legacy act has built a captivating discography. Their 1999 self-titled album cultivated an array of stand-out songwriting making for a distinctive sound. The record, released by Madonna’s Maverick records and produced by Goldfinger’s John Feldmann, highlights singles, “Falling Star,” which reached #36 on the Billboard Modern Rock chart and “Backstab,” garnering attention and laying the groundwork for Showoff’s ascent in the alternative rock scene.
Showoff is the blueprint of evolution with their ability to revolutionize the music industry while staying true to their roots. With staple albums including Around the Corner Fudge Is Made, Waiting for You, and Midwest Side Story, the band has continued to build on its narrative of modernizing a classic sound.
Now, the band is gearing up to re-release their 2006 fan-favorite track, “Turn Out the Lights,” on July 10. “It explores the loneliness you feel when someone you care about doesn’t reciprocate your feelings any longer,” says lead vocalist, Chris Messer. “Turn Out The Lights” is a transactional appeal, hoping not to deal with the pain of having your relationship end. It was about a specific girl that I was very into when writing the song, and she definitely has no idea it was about her. More or less I was very into her and she never felt that way.”
Showoff has reached notable accomplishments throughout the years, having their 1999 single, “Spill” featured in the 2000’s movie, Digimon: The Movie and dabbling in cover tracks with Madonna’s “Borderline” in the 2002 Pop Goes Punk compilation. The band has taken the time to hone in on creating an exhilarating show for their audience and has extensive touring history, being featured on Van’s Warped Tour and have shared the stage with Goldfinger, Bloodhound Gang, Marvelous 3, Rx Bandits, The Hippos, Everclear, The Benjamins and Allister.
With a history rooted in friendship, resilience, and a commitment to their craft, Showoff continues to make waves in the alternative rock scene. Showoff remains a beacon of authenticity and a reminder of the enduring power of passionate, genuine rock music. Hear the re-recorded version of “Turn Out The Lights,” out July 10.
