Sepultura // Jinjer // Obituary // Jesus Piece // The European Farewell Tour // Live Review // The Telegraph Building // Belfast

So, when this bad boy was announced I think I may have peed myself a little, I cannot lie. What a line-up!

Sepultura threatens to bow out after a forty-year career by the majestic Brazilian band made famous by dos hermanos Max and Igor Cavalera. A back catalogue to be proud of, Sepultura made their mark on the metal scene right from the off with Morbid Visions in 1986. Still, it was Schizophrenia in 1987 that caught the attention of the masses and the band in the eyeline of numerous record labels of the time.

With a career spanning four decades, there have been highs and lows, band members in and out of the band but the enduring legacy of the music of Sepultura is forever engrained in the DNA of the metal-going masses globally and tonight for many, hearing all those classic tracks here, live in the flesh, this will be a religious experience, to say the least.

In tow, we have three monstrous bands, Ukraine’s Jinjer, one of the modern metals’ most in-demand bands, Obituary, one of the USA’s finest death metal bands, cut from the same cloth as the lads in Sepultura, Obituary has seen and done it all and will be a welcome addition to the line up this evening. Last but not least, Jesus Piece, all the way from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA these guys offer their brand of Hardcore, Metalcore and Sludge.

Sweet baby Jesus and on a Sunday too, lawdy lawd! Forgive me for what I am about to witness! #nosleeptillbedtime

Opening tonight is Jesus Piece, this is my first time catching this gargantuan-sounding band live, Jesus H Christ these guys are lethal! Right from the off they rip the skin off your face with slamming riffage and guttural growls that I’m sure the gates of hell have to check in on once in a while! Their frontman and bassist interchanging vocals as they unleash a new level of brutality I don’t think the Telegraph Building has yet experienced. The songs are fast and furious, the Belfast crowd don’t quite know what has hit them, and the brutality of Jesus Piece’s sound just cuts right through, these guys only have two full releases to date, the shamdemic messing with their mojo and flow but their delivery is on a bother level and although it’s a ridiculously early start time the room is packed and everyone’s eyes are glued on that stage. A breathtaking introduction to Belfast for Jesus Piece, there are gonna be some sore heads in the morning!

There’s a sense of anticipation that hangs heavy in the air as Obituary take the stage at The Telegraph Building in Belfast at 6:50pm on a chilly November night, their long-awaited return to Northern Ireland since their last appearance nearly a decade ago. The venue, a mix of old industrial charm and modern intimacy, serves as the perfect backdrop for the Floridian death metal legends, who’ve been crushing stages around the world since the late 1980s. Tonight, they remind us exactly why they remain at the apex of death metal’s brutal evolution,  in a plume of smoke they launch into a blistering set covering a lifetime DNA all over the old-school Death Metal scene, a powerhouse performance from one of the USA’s stalwarts, laying down the foundation for so many to follow Obituary lay siege on The Telegraph Building with a sonic assault on the senses, the riffage slamming you in the chest time and time again, Obituary’s setlist tonight is an expert mix of the old and new. Kicking things off with Redneck Stomp and Slowly We Rot immediately establishes that this show will not be a nostalgic stroll down memory lane—this is a band still very much in its prime. Songs from The End Complete and Cause of Death are delivered with ferocity, but there’s no denying the newer material, from Inked in Blood and Dying of Everything, holds up just as powerfully. The Wrong Time and War hit with precision that proves the band’s creative vitality. Obituary’s performance tonight at The Telegraph Building is a triumph. Their ability to still bring the thunder, after all these years, is a testament to their songwriting brilliance and their commitment to staying true to their roots. They’re not just a band playing to a legacy—they’re a living, breathing force that continues to push the boundaries of death metal. With Belfast being treated to such a raw and powerful display of musicianship, it’s clear that Obituary remains untouchable in the genre they helped define.

A masterclass in death metal. A legendary performance. The crowd will undoubtedly be talking about this one for years to come.

7:50 and the mighty Jinjer hit the stage, these folks have been tearing it up all over the globe over recent years, with the struggles in their homeland of Ukraine, Jinjer has been flying the flag for their nation raising awareness via their music at solo shows and festivals whenever they play. But the biggest pull is their unbelievable style of modern progressive metal with the magnetic Tatiana Shmaylukon vocals, one of metal’s finest, never mind on the female side of things but one of the greats in the genre. She just captivates you from the off, the band musically sublime, the sound is massive, technically head melting but equally fascinating live, fuse that all together with one of the finest frontwomen in the business and you’re onto a winner. Belfast is captivated, bathed in blue light and smoke the gnarly riffage being tossed out from the stage against the intoxicating visuals is a real winner, I hope this is the start of Jonjer visiting these shores more often. Their performance from start to finish was majestic, technically brilliant, musically sublime, Jinjer offer a snapshot of the health of metal in 2024 and it is comforting to know it is in very good hands. I cannot recommend catching Jinjer live any chance you can.

Tonight, The Telegraph Building in Belfast is packed to the brim, and the air is electric with anticipation. This isn’t just any Sepultura show—it’s the European farewell performance of one of the most influential bands in metal history. After over three decades of blazing a trail across continents and genre lines, the Brazilian titans have announced they are winding down their European chapter, and Belfast is lucky enough to witness the grand send-off. It’s a bittersweet moment for fans, but if there was ever a way to say goodbye, Sepultura are determined to go out with a bang.

Frontman Derrick Green, who has carried the torch since 1998, stands front and center, his commanding presence as magnetic as ever. His vocal delivery—gritty, forceful, and full of raw emotion—still packs the punch it did when he first joined the band. The stage is alive with energy as guitarist Andreas Kisser’s signature riffs tear through the air, while drummer Greyson Nekrutman delivers an aggressive, pulse-quickening performance that’s nothing short of mesmerizing. The rhythm section, with bassist Paulo Jr., is as tight as ever, each member playing with the kind of precision that has been Sepultura’s hallmark for decades.

The setlist tonight is a perfect reflection of Sepultura’s immense legacy. The band plays a carefully curated selection of songs spanning their entire career, from thrash anthems to the groundbreaking tribal rhythms of Roots to their more recent offerings, proving they are far more than just a nostalgia act. Whether it’s the blistering Arise, the groove-laden Territory, or the devastating Choke, every song serves to remind the crowd why Sepultura remains one of the most respected and innovative bands in metal.

The first major highlight is Refuse/Resist, one of Sepultura’s defining anthems, which instantly sets the room ablaze. The entire crowd chants along in perfect unison, hands raised high in a show of unity and power. As the song builds to its signature breakdown, the venue shakes, and it’s clear: this is a moment in metal history that will not soon be forgotten.

But the real emotional peak of the night comes during the closer Roots Bloody Roots. As the opening riff reverberates throughout the room, there’s a moment of pause—fans, old and new, are swaying together, almost in reverence. Derrick Green’s voice cracks slightly as he delivers the iconic lines, the weight of the moment sinking in. This isn’t just a song; it’s a statement, a declaration of identity, of roots—both musical and cultural—that have carried this band to the highest echelons of metal.

The tribal rhythms from Ratamahatta hit hard, giving the audience a taste of Sepultura’s unmatched ability to blend heavy metal with Brazilian percussion. The rhythm section is hypnotic, almost ceremonial, and the crowd is swept up in its primal force. It’s moments like this that remind you why Sepultura has always been more than a metal band—they’ve always been a cultural force.

The energy throughout the night is truly something special. At times, it feels like a homecoming; at others, like a farewell. Derrick Green’s connection with the crowd is palpable, and while the mood might lean towards bittersweet, there’s still a palpable sense of triumph. The band knows they’re saying goodbye to a chapter of their career, but there’s no sense of closure—only celebration.

The atmosphere in the venue is one of catharsis. Fans shout, sing, and headbang with fervor, feeding off the band’s undeniable energy. During quieter moments, like the haunting intro to Kaiowas, there’s a collective sense of reverence—everybody knows this is the last time they’ll experience these songs on European soil, and they’re soaking it in.

The crowd is mixed—young fans discovering Sepultura for the first time, older fans who’ve followed the band since their thrash roots, and a few who’ve traveled across Europe just to be part of this historic night. For many, it’s more than just a concert; it’s an opportunity to pay tribute to a band that’s helped shape the course of modern metal.

Sepultura’s European farewell show at The Telegraph Building is a powerful reminder of the band’s unique place in the annals of metal history. This is a band that never stopped evolving, never stopped challenging the boundaries of their genre, and tonight, they prove that their influence is as strong as ever. The night is one of triumph, a celebration of all they’ve achieved, and while the farewell might feel permanent, there’s a sense that this is not the end for Sepultura’s spirit. The crowd leaves the venue buzzing with gratitude and respect, knowing they were part of something truly historic.

A fitting farewell—emotional, powerful, and utterly unforgettable. Sepultura, you will be missed. Broken, battered and bruised the delirious metal-heads stream out into the cool night air asking themselves if was it all a dream. That ringing in your head says otherwise, but sure what’s a sore head between friends?

One of the biggest metal nights in 2024 in Northern Ireland has come to a close, it will take something pretty special to top that one.
