Séamus Foley Releases His New EP ‘Into the Night’

UK-born Americana artist and acclaimed singer-songwriter, Séamus Foley today releases his brand-new, 6-track EP, ‘Into the Night’.

Though Séamus himself was born in Manchester to an Anglo/Irish family, ‘Into the Night’ feels like 24-carat Americana. In recent years, the UK has been adding homegrown artists to both Americana and Country: artists who’ve got a love of the forms, their own takes on them and are adding to creatively to the genres. Séamus Foley stands as a fine example.

“Foley is a true craftsman,” said Jace Media“his songs are sweet, poignant and tell the truth.”

FATEA praised Foley’s “Beautifully constructed songs…” and called ‘Into The Night’ “an EP of genuine imagination and quality.”

“I had a very clear idea of how I wanted these songs to sound,” says Séamus Foley, “and Miles and all the musicians involved helped to make that idea a reality.

“This EP was born out of the frustration of lockdown and a lack of creative outlet. Which means

some of it was recorded remotely using people’s home gear, and some of it was made in

recording studios. The results, I think, speak to the expertise and professionalism of those

involved. I am really happy both with how we made this EP, and how it has turned out.

“These songs are quite similar in many ways: Guitar-driven, always trying to convey a particular

emotion or situation, usually something slightly desperate. There’s an urgency to some and a

slow kind of sadness to others, but I’ve always felt those seemingly opposite sensibilities fit

together quite snugly.”

“All the songs on this recording deal with struggle in some form, whether complex feelings of loss or longing or more simple affairs like the call of the road or having writer’s block. I’ve always been amazed when a song I hear manages to articulate something that I’ve been feeling, and that’s a piece of magic that I’d love to be able to embed in my work: to capture a feeling that people can relate to.”

All the EP’s songs were written by Séamus Foley. Production was by Miles Myerscough-Harris and Séamus Foley; engineered and mixed by Miles Myerscough-Harris at WholeHog Media; the performances were recorded remotely at various home studios, with drums recorded at Drumsmith Studio; Vocals, Electric Guitars and Overdubs recorded at Whispering Bob Harris’ Under The Apple Tree Studio in rural Oxfordshire. Mastering was by Pete Maher in London.

The track list for ’Into The Night’ gathers together six original songs: ‘Into The Night’the slow-building but satisfying ‘Letters To Victoria’the haunting, folk-sounding Black & White’; the wanderlust, resonant voice and layered guitar road trip of ‘Colorado Skies’; the languid lyrical imagery of ‘Ground’and the rolling, full-voiced self-reflection of ‘Old Rivers Flow’, complete with acoustic guitar and harmonica-like keys (all c/o Séamus).

Séamus describes his music as a mixture of several different styles, all essentially based around the guitar. “I grew up listening to a wide variety of music,” he explains, “and I have never been drawn towards being a purist of any particular genre. It’s folk, rock n’ roll, country, pop, blues and more but none of those things in their original form. Being able to mix and change styles has always been part of who I am as a songwriter.”
