About Satanic Tea Co. In the hands of the enigmatic Crucifix, Satanic Tea Co was launched in January of 2017, initially as a clothing retailer that sold tea as an accessory, but it soon became clear that the beverage side of the business was where its future lay. “I’ve loved metal and alternative music since I was 11, it’s very much ingrained into who I am,” Crucifix explains. “A metal themed tea company wasn’t something I was seeing out in the world, it’s all very baby blue, and pleasant looking branding generally. If I was starting a business, I wanted it to be a reflection of who I am and what I like.” In 2022 comes a whole new incarnation of the brand with Satanic Tea Co. as Crucifix launches a death metal band under the same name. “Turning the tea company into a band is just incorporating more of what I love into the business,” he enthuses. “It’s been a couple of years since I have been in an active band, and not having that outlet was really taking a toll on my mental health. I jumped on the opportunity to create music again and have that outlet back. I think it’s something I need to have on some level in my life. A lack of creating music and having that release ultimately makes me suffer, and not operate well. And I think it will also help introduce people to tea who may have never dived into a good cuppa.” Having fronted deathcore band Doom Cannon between 2007-2010, and most recently Slumlord from 2012 to 2018, Crucifix has been in bands since he was a kid, and has developed a ferocious roar over the years, making it clear that this is no novelty act. For Satanic Tea Co. – the band – he hooked up with ridiculously talented multi-instrumentalist/producer/mixer Re Fujioka, and they set to work on their first salvo, the monstrously heavy track “Blood Drenched Torture Chamber”. “The music we make is rooted in death metal and thrash, with influence from classics like Cannibal Corpse, Cryptopsy, and Suffocation, as well as a lot of the MySpace grind that was going around in the early 2000s. The goal with the music is definitely to be as extreme and ridiculous as we possibly can make it, to make people go what the fuck!? That’s what I have fun doing, and I want to see where that can take us.” Lyrically, it comes from a very real, dark place, Crucifix writing from the heart. “The song is about the mental gymnastics constantly going on inside my head. The Blood Drenched Torture Chamber is where I have spent a lot of time in my mind struggling with depression, suicidal thoughts and the torture I put myself through because of the way my brain functions. Bad thoughts are put in a box, or torture chamber, in my head, and when things are getting pretty rough, they spill out and fester into my everyday, making me miserable and closed off. Basically, no matter what I do to try and help my mental health, eventually I feel like I’m where I started, feeling like there’s only one way out.” The song is also accompanied by a suitably brutal video, offering up a visual representation of how things feel in Crucifix’s head, depicting the struggle of being held captive inside himself. “The video ends with me struggling with someone on the floor and striking them with a hammer. After the camera pans out, I am the one who’s actually dead on the floor, not someone else. My body did this to itself. In this scenario the BDTC won.” Despite Crucifix’s personal struggles, for both the tea company and the band, the future is looking very bright. The long-term plan is also to put together a full band and play live, Crucifix loving being on stage. “The goal with the band is ultimately an outlet for me to get out my aggression, and one day hit the road on tour for world domination, at the same time helping our brand awareness – and possessing the masses with Satanic Tea!” Asked how successful the tea company has been to this point is a hard question for a humble man to answer, but having been able to turn it into a full-time job, collaborate with acts such as Cradle Of Filth, Kittie, Bloodbath, Twin Temple, and Midnight, and featured in The New York Times and Cracked Magazine, who ran profiles on them about their gruesome and comedic social media marketing, things are going very well, and Crucifix is willing to put the necessary work in to build the brand. “All I know is, if this is just the beginning, I’m excited for the future.” Satanic Tea Co. online: http://www.satanicteaco.com https://www.tiktok.com/@satanicteaco https://www.instagram.com/pitchblacknorth/ https://twitter.com/satanicteaco https://open.spotify.com/track/5G3pTQ3LdZlUxzn4j1A1V7?si=AD-kj7tdSFuCSafsZj_VBA https://satanicteaco.bandcamp.com/releases |
