For my second time in less than a week, I was heading to the o2 Institute in Birmingham for a night of loud Pop-punk goodness as Rory hits the road for her largest UK tour to date. Coming along for the ride are Lake Malice and As December Falls, so a stacked
line up of some of the biggest up-and-coming names in the alt scene, so excitement was the only feeling in the packed room as I entered and got ready for the first band.
Lake Malice hit the stage with an utterly ridiculous level of energy and easily got the crowd moving as they blasted through their half-hour set. Great stage presence and an even greater sound made the band my highlight of the night, and the crowd ate up the performance. It’s always a great feeling seeing a band I’ve never heard before and not being able to look away from the stage. Definitely one to keep an eye on, and I look forward to seeing them again as soon as I can!

Up next was As December Falls, a name I’ve seen everywhere over the last couple of years and one I’m glad to have ticked off my list to see finally. The first thing that stood out was just how infectiously happy the band were on stage, and backing it up with a tight, clean set made it even better for both myself and the crowd. Finally, mixing in their great stage presence made it a performance I couldn’t look away from. Another great performance that was adored by those in attendance and another band that people need to keep an eye on, as I don’t see it being long until they’re heading this same stage.

Finally, the night’s main act, Røry, hit the stage, and the crowd went absolutely feral from the moment she did. Over the last couple of years, Røry has taken the world by storm, be it from her work raising awareness of ADHD and disabilities to her musical career. it’ll be a struggle to find someone in the alt scene who hasn’t at least seen one of her Instagram reels at the minimum. From the moment she hit the stage, the room was screaming along to every word in the set. Rory was great on stage (and on the balcony for a brief spell), and it was obvious that the performance was exactly what the fans were after, and it was great to see a crowd love the experience as much as they did.
What I most appreciated was how her determination to create inclusive spaces and her constant activist level work for disability awareness and inclusion shone through incredibly clearly in her performance and the entire running on the night. It’s truly refreshing seeing an artist stand so true to their beliefs, and giving people a damn good time in doing so.
