Manchester’s ROLLA have built a burgeoning reputation on the back of larger-than-life anthems, heavyweight riffs and towering hooks of songs such as ‘Ease My Mind’, ‘Sweet Lullaby’ and ‘No Violence’. But the band now demonstrate their growing power and versatility with today’s release of their eagerly anticipated second EP ‘We Owe You Nothing’. It includes the new single ‘Beautiful Lie’.
Plaintive acoustic guitars signal that ‘Beautiful Lie’ is coming from a different part of the ROLLA sonic spectrum. But even devoted fans will be surprised by just how much they excel in this twist upon their usual sound. James Gilmore’s vocals burn with vulnerability as his words hit at the heart of feelings of loneliness and a lack of direction in life’s grind. But as ‘Beautiful Lie’ soars, its hook majestically translates hurt into hope. Those heady comparisons with The Verve’s timeless ballads now make more sense than ever before.
James says, “This is probably the most professional and mature song we’ve ever written. Every part of it, from the structure, to the melodies and the weight of the lyrics, it feels intentional. It’s got that anthemic, hands in the air energy that was made for festival crowds, one of those songs that doesn’t just sit in the background, but takes over the space it’s in. It’s a huge contrast to the heavier tracks on the EP, but in its own way, it’s just as powerful, built for big moments, big stages, and big crowds.”
ROLLA have already previewed the ‘We Owe You Nothing’ with the title track with the thunderous, psych-tinged intensity of the EP’s title track and the recent ‘It Ain’t Easy’. It is completed by a new song in the shape of ‘The Slide’ which received its premiere courtesy of John Kennedy at Radio X. The band’s first release on Run On Records, the EP follows their 2023’s ‘Nothing Less Than Everything’, which shot straight to #1 on the iTunes Album and Alternative Charts. ‘We Owe You Nothing’ is also the band’s first vinyl release, and is available to buy HERE.
Also featuring Luke McConnell (guitar), Tom Paddon (guitar) and Luke Gilmore (bass), ROLLA recently announced the mutual departure of their drummer and friend Saul Bardsley. Taking his place behind the kit is Ryan Hunt, who was the band’s original drummer when they first started but who couldn’t fully commit at the time.
ROLLA have proven their live credentials with highlights including a big reception in arenas with Kasabian, festivals such as Truck and the Neighbourhood Weekender, and last year’s rammed fundraiser at the Salford Lads’ Club. Tickets are flying for the biggest headline show to date at Manchester’s New Century Hall on May 3rd, with a limited amount remaining available HERE. Their upcoming touring plans also include shows with Pastel, an all-day Indie Showcase in Sheffield, and festival dates at The Godney Gathering and Truck. They’re also confirmed to record a session for long-term champion John Kennedy on Radio X. Expect much more to follow soon.
