Since earning a new wave of critical praise for last year’s comeback album ‘Planet Nowhere’, Razorlight have been busy reconnecting new with old fans and introducing themselves to new ones with high octane shows, including a sold-out a UK headline tour and a packed Brixton Academy for a special ‘Up All Night’ anniversary celebration. But now it’s time for Razorlight to unveil new music with today’s release of the single ‘Sugar High’.
‘Sugar High’ is an atypical Razorlight song, playing on loud-and-quiet dynamics and raw energy in a way that recalls grunge and the ‘90s slacker-rock scene. Yet it’s still characteristically Razorlight, instantly addictive like many of their most famous moments and dominated by Johnny Borrell’s irrepressible charisma. He produced and mixed the track alongside George Murphy.
It’s a song with an unusual back story. As Johnny explains, “’Sugar High’ was going to be a Jealous Nostril song but no-one gave a damn about that band, so I forgot about it and prepared to bury it in my coffin in the front hall. But then Carl [Dalemo, Razorlight bassist] phoned me up and said he’d heard it, and he said ‘If that’s not a Razorlight song I’m going to kill myself… Or you.’ He seemed very determined so I thought I’d better turn it into a Razorlight song.”
The reunion of the classic Razorlight line-up was completed by Björn Ågren (guitar) and Andy Burrows (drums). The spark that inspired their original era returned, having previously generated three Top 5 albums including the #1, 5 x Platinum self-titled record, a catalogue of hit singles, and gargantuan shows ranging from headlining the Reading Festival to performing at Live 8.
‘Planet Nowhere’ was supported with airplay spanning Radio X, Radio 2, Virgin Radio and Absolute Radio, while media coverage included features in The Guardian and NME through to coverage across the tabloids. The album saw Razorlight return to the Top 10 of the Independent Albums Chart.
Razorlight’s summer of touring has included the Isle of Wight, Brighton On the Beach and Margate Summer Series, plus big outdoor shows with Kaiser Chiefs and James. Expect more news from the Razorlight camp soon.
