As The Menzingers prepare to release their seventh studio album ‘Some Of It Was True’ this Friday via Epitaph, the Philly quartet have revealed a final taster track from the record. ‘Try’ is a swaggering composition, with a slight power-pop influence and bristling with the feel of a real life Menzingers show. That live show feel is one that’s palpable across the record and is a result of the recording process they embarked upon with Grammy-nominated producer Brad Cook (Bon Iver, The War on Drugs, Waxahatchee). “It brought us back to our energetic side as a band,” guitarist and vocalist Tom May comments of the experience making the record. “We got to let loose, which is what drew us to the energy of being in a band in the first place. This is a live band—why shouldn’t we record live songs? As a result, we’re back to why we started this band in the first place.” The Menzingers have released a clutch of storytelling anthems in anticipation of the album: they reckon with their pain in ‘Come on Heartache’, balance the most singalong of choruses with bleak realities on ‘Hope is a Dangerous Little Thing’ and ‘There’s No Place In This World For Me’ sees vocalist Greg Barnett pushing the limits of the natural rasp and twang in his distinct vocal tone to devastating effect. Lyrically, ‘Some Of It Was True’ is a showcase for how The Menzingers’ songwriting has expanded beyond their own personal experiences, drawing from what’s happening around them and the lives of those who keep this world’s lifeforce pumping. Acknowledging that they’re in a very different place than when they formed in 2008, this album embraces change and it’s definitely for the better. “This record just feels different for us,” Greg Barnett (vocals, guitar) explains. “It’s a really important one in our catalog, and a pivotal moment in our history. We have the liberty of our fans growing with us now, and after writing these lyrical songs about where we are in life, we decided to take other peoples’ stories and make something bigger out of it.” The start of 2024 will see The Menzingers embark on a UK and European headline tour and they’ll be playing two dates at the iconic Electric Ballroom in London.
