Amping up to the 3rd July release of their upcoming debut EP “Baptise”, Terminals have released the crushingly heavy yet sparkling third single “Depths”.

Following the Kerrang!-featured lead single “Swim” and effervescent title track “Baptise”,’ “Depths” opens with discordant guitars before delicately layered vocals commands a wave-like break where jagged drums convene into a swirling concerto. Terminals have a profound relationship with expansion – it’s difficult to imagine such a sweeping track coming to life in a small Airbnb-turned-studio, entirely self-produced. Equally deep lyrics are delivered as if James Whitehouse’s vocals are yet another instrument to build from and often act like a guide through Terminals’ world-building.

Speaking on the track, Whitehouse says: “Depths is about being at the bottom. I wrote this song about my lowest point and the torment that came with the thoughts I had running through my head every day. The lyrics touch upon how hidden feelings were burying me, as I spiralled through my dark descent. I wasn’t even fully aware of how I felt, and the emotion and feel of this song expresses the torment that I went through during this part of my life.”

Announcing the EP last month, Terminals say “Baptise is about big life changes, and starting afresh. After lockdown, each of us had changed quite a lot, from struggles with alcohol to being disconnected from the things that gave our lives meaning. As soon as we met up and started playing music again, we realised that’s why we were here. We poured every part of our hearts and souls into every piece of music we crafted, and this EP perfectly expresses the journey we went on musically, and in our personal lives. From the lowest points, addiction, anxiety, to falling in love, finding meaning in life, and accepting change, Baptise is about realising that only you can save yourself, and you shouldn’t run and hide.”

Set for release on 3rd July, “Baptise” is a jagged atmospheric wonderland, a testament to the band’s relentless pursuit of escapism through the act of creation. Retreating to an airbnb transformed into a DIY studio, Terminals embarked on a journey to self-produce a record of profound depth, traversing the realms of shoegaze and post-metal to create a grand cinematic expanse. Self-produced by bassist James Cohu with mastering by Hamish Dickinson (Palm Reader, Jinda Giant, Redwood), this debut will feature the recently released title-track and “Swim” which have earned support for Kerrang!, Rock Sound, Distorted Sound, BBC Introducing Midlands and more.

Quickly building a live reputation, Terminals have supported the likes of Rosary and Spotlights – both in London and in their base of Birmingham. They also appeared at Gazefest and Birmingham’s HMV building earlier this month.

Hailing from Birmingham, Terminals are James Whitehouse (vocals & guitar), James Cohu (bass) and Joe Cooper (drums).  Formed at the end of 2022, the three-piece are set to step into the UK alternative scene with their forthcoming body of work (more information to be revealed soon). Citing Deftones, Radiohead and Loathe as influences, Terminals lean into the boundless possibilities of ambient riffs, immersive soundscapes and honest, emotional storytelling.
