SCORPION TEA RELEASE DEBUT LP – OUT NOW

SCORPION TEA RELEASE DEBUT LP – OUT TODAY

The newest project of Edley ODowd(Toilet Boys,Psychic TV,Kylesa) is happy to present the debut LP – out now via GIVE/TAKE.
Scorpion Tea is set to take the experimental music scene by storm with their debut album, a sonic journey born from a spontaneous adventure that was nothing short of cinematic: “In May of 2022, my longtime friend Chris Cruz messaged me,” recounts Edley ODowd, the mastermind known for his work with Toilet Boys, Kylesa and Psychic TV. “He had just finished an album he had been working on while recovering from knee surgery. He was bored and in need of company. ‘Want to come hang out and play on this album I worked on?’ Laughing, I said: ‘To Colombia?’ Seemed crazy, but after being cooped up indoors with Covid hassles for two years, I checked some travel sites and sealed the deal by booking a flight.”
The lush surroundings of Armenia, Colombia, coupled with the local vibes, fueled their creative fire. Chris played demos he and lyricist Anthony Edward Diaz had crafted earlier, which instantly resonated with Edley’s vision for Scorpion Tea. “My plan was to rapidly record an album on my own dime and shop it to labels,” Edley continues. “Within 24 hours of making my way back to the US, I enlisted my son, Fern Puma, to play bass.”
“It seemed like a moment later that Chris messaged me to let me know that Edley was looking to start a new project, and that they wanted me to be the vocalist.” – recalls Anthony talking about the beginning of what became Scorpion Tea. “My enthusiastic ‘yes’ was almost immediately followed by ten new demos from Chris in our fledgling group chat AND news that we would record them in LA in a few weeks!”

The debut self-titled album was crafted under the scorching Los Angeles summer sun at Studio 22, led by producer Thomas Dolas (Mr. Elevator, Osees). ” The album was recorded to tape.” – explains Chris. “We spent six days in the brutal end of Summer heat, coupled with tons of equipment running, causing the heat outside to match the heat inside,” Guitarist sums the recording process simply saying: “It was nothing less than hallucinatory at times. We had 12 songs we wanted to record, 10 of which made it on the album.”
While a well-rehearsed and prepared quartet brought the power of performance, expressivity and their uncompromising ethics, Thomas Dolas and his studio partner Joo Joo Ashworth (Air Ball Ball) brought out some unique devices into the studio, including the H910 Harmonizer. A perfect foundation for the record like this one. “Scorpion Tea were a real pleasure to work with.” – marks Thomas: “Truly monsters playing broken instruments! They had such a great raw and dystopian energy in the studio. I think all that heat definitely got infused into those tracks! I hope we helped transfer/transform that to the ears of listeners and future fans.”
