Today, alt-pop wonder Ellie Dixon releases her new single ‘Big Lizard Energy’ via Decca Records. Injected with her synonymous dash of wit, the new track echoes the singer’s anxieties and explains how to overcome them like all 24-year-olds should: by becoming bigger than your problems and imagining you’re a gigantic extinct reptile!

Opening for UK Eurovision hero Sam Ryder, but also JC Stewart and Half Alive, Ellie has already garnered support from music tastemakers, notably being recently featured in The i ‘Artists To Watch in 2023’ and Dork’s HYPE List 2023 among others.

Alongside the release, Ellie announces a UK headline tour, including a stop at London’s Lafayette on May 24th, before hitting the road to Germany for two exclusive dates. Tickets go on sale on Friday 17th February at 10:00 AM here.

Announced last week with a video game and premiered last night as ‘Future Bop’ on BBC Radio 1’s Future Pop, ‘Big Lizard Energy’ is following the release of her debut single ‘Swing!’ which today counts more than 600,000 global streams additionally to being supported on BBC Radio 1’s Future Artists with Jack Saunders (“Swing! sounds like a pop song that has had 15 writers on it, but it’s just Ellie Dixon…she’s written, she’s produced it, all by herself”) and Future Sounds With Clara Amfo.

Coming with a shadow puppets-inspired lyric video crafted with five of her fans, ‘Big Lizard Energy’ is another demonstration of the Cambridge-born’s talent to play with words and items from her everyday life, culminating in an intelligent brand of indie-pop. Speaking about the track, Ellie says: “Big Lizard Energy is the musical embodiment of a parody disaster movie all about gaining perspective on the stresses around you. As an anxious person I’ve always found myself blowing problems out of proportion so during a time I was particularly struggling with this, I wanted to write a song that did the opposite – blew ME out of proportion.

I imagined I was a giant lizard towering over a city and suddenly I felt a lot better (‘Not so scared when I’m 320ft’). It’s a tongue-in-cheek look into the overthinking mind and how panic can escalate quickly (“Hit the red alert when it’s just a bit of caution”) but how we can control our response to the things that panic us. It’s a reminder to take a breather and remember that we are much bigger than the negative parts of our lives.”

Making waves with her self-recorded and self-aware alt-pop EP recorded from her bedroom studio – playing and recording all instruments, layering her vocals, producing and sampling anything else she can find around the house (including saucepans, mugs and more), Ellie gathered a community of 1.2 million followers on TikTok.

Reaching 15 million streams across her catalogue, other highlights from her exciting career so far include Swing! picked as Jo Whiley’s ‘Infatuation’ (track of the week), spinned multiple times on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 2 and added to the Sunday Brunch playlist, a live Maida Vale session for BBC Radio 1, a featured BBC Radio 1 Introducing Track of the Week (‘Green Grass’), playing Latitude Festival for a second year running (after headlining the BBC Introducing Stage last year), amongst a run of summer festivals including Secret Garden Party, Shindig, The Great Escape and Boardmasters as well as taking to the stage at London’s legendary music venues KOKO and Scala but also the new central-London immersive venue The Outernet.

Combining clever humour with a learned wisdom to create witty, life-affirming sounds, the self-made artist and producer has become an online — and exceedingly offline — phenomenon. With more music to come and live performances on the way,  Ellie Dixon is establishing herself as the true ambassador of the next generation of artists, already starting to make 2023 her own.
