Queerpop Artist Stacey Kavanagh Releases New Single ‘Girls Gays Theys’

Stacey K enters the Irish Queercore scene with the release of her second single Girls Gays Theys. A classically trained pianist and singer – she uses a mix of vintage keyboards and synths to deliver sweet pop-centric melodies with a bang.
‘Girls Gays Theys’ was wrote in a rage one day while scrolling social media, a particularly misguided post from a friend jumped out at Stacey calling for the banning of books from Irish libraries containing LGBTQ sex education material. This archaic thinking fresh on her mind, she turned to the piano and sang the first line of the track, ‘Natalie, you made me feel so angry, talking shit on the internet, about the books kids shouldn’t get’. This rage fuelled genesis gave way to an extremely honest conversation of sexual identity through song which evolved into a strong message against ignorant hate.
While the message is central to the track the music supporting it is just as important. Stacey plays the Wurlitzer giving the track its rich melodic leadline and uses an 80’s synth to add a modern pop flavour. The track features Nora Frederich of Cork based band, elbé to give the drums a sweet grunge drive.
‘Girls Gays Theys’ is the first step forward for Stacey as an artist, expressing her style and voice to tackle a topic that shouldn’t need tackling at all. This music arrives from a deeply personal place, wrapped up in sexual identity, awakening, realisation and positivity in the face of ignorant hate.
