Sometimes strong emotions can make you lose focus. That’s not the case for Phoenix, AZ based hardcore band American Standards. Since their inception ten years ago, American Standards have been had to overcome their share of adversity. After losing their founding guitarist to suicide and lead vocalist Brandon Kellum’s father to cancer in quick succession, the band have successfully channelled the troubled waters of loss while incorporating sharp and at times witty social commentary that offers a conduit to acceptance. With their 4th and most recent album ‘Anti-Melody’, distributed by Victory Records, American Standards took a new approach, mixing, producing and releasing the collection independently, after recording at Kingsize Soundlabs (Mars Volta, Letlive, Bad Religion). In keeping with the band’s mantra, “Don’t wait for things to happen, make them happen”, the result is a raw and visceral, a powerful and emotive collection, pulling no punches. Over the years that followed, the band hit the mark on a national scale and beyond, earning tastemaker acclaim from Kerrang Radio, Alternative Press and Revolver and sharing the stage with legends of the hardcore scene, including Every Time I Die, Comeback Kid and Knocked Loose. Having kicked off 2023 with “The Tourist”, Brandon Kellum and co. continue their momentum with their second single of the year – the heavy and unerringly engaging “The Vagrant”.
