Irish quartet Modernlove. A fresh-faced band from Drogheda, Ireland has been making waves over the past few years, a band who came to the fore out of lockdown, signed during the lockdown and who haven’t really had an opportunity to catch their breath since are here in Belfast tonight on the midpoint of their UK & Irish headlining tour.
Tonight in tow we have Belfast duo Dark Tropics, a duo in the form of Rio and Gerard. Now, these guys are new to me but seem to have been whipping up a storm on the local music scene for a while, having recently supported Belle & Sebastian on their Irish dates and their debut album “Ink’ being shortlisted for the NI Music Prize. So when watching them in full flow it makes a lot of sense that they are so comfortable and fluid at what they do, Rio especially has a swagger and a presence that oozes from her and their set goes down a storm with the Belfast crowd this evening. I am more accustomed to dark sweaty rock gigs at The Limelight and Voodoo so this is a change of pace but the duo have a quality about them that is easy to see and sonically they have a wide and varied range of influences that come across in their set, well supported in the room it’s a great start to the evening.

They are a young band who has been thrust into the limelight in a short period of time, signed over lockdown and is on the road now in support of the two EP’s they have dropped to date, Monochrome Blue and Oh My Mind. Whilst the lads have been together in some shape or form for a few years now the band experience as for many was disrupted by the shamdemic, but clearly, that hasn’t stopped the lads doing their thing and tonight we are treated to a charming set by these young indie rockers. So at 10 pm the lads saunter out from the dressing room access onto the floor to a round of applause and the sheeple in The Deers Head slowly step b step move forward to catch a glimpse of ‘The Next Big Thing” in the Irish music scene.
I can see a gaggle of young girls who have been making their way through the crowd as if playing a real-life game of Frogger, hoping in between the crowd clambering their way up to the front as to catch a glimpse of these guys in the flesh, their eyes wide like Deers in the headlights with glee. As the music starts the lads get into their groove and I can see the heads bopping far and wide in the Belfast crowd and all is well in Belfast on this fine evening.
I catch the first few songs of the modernlove.’s set and leave them to it, their adoring fan-base holding them aloft as the party gets started and only goes up from there. They have a charm and presence that resonates with fans far and wide and after chatting to them they all have a well-grounded, relatable persona that only the Irish can do. I have no doubt these lad’s should be on your radar over the next few years as they make their mark on the local music scene and beyond. Watch this space.
