‘Wasted Time’ was written following the breakup of the original Mirrorglass line-up. After a few weeks of down time, this song was written and sparked the drive to re-record ‘Handle With Care’. The song captures a moment in time. It was the first words I put to paper in the aftermath of the breakup. It was reflective of the past, but I’m a stubborn person. Not once during that whole time did I think “this might be the end of Mirrorglass”. I knew it was the end of something but I also knew, as long as I kept writing, Mirrorglass would still exist. It marked a real shift in the way I write though.
In the early days of the project, I always wrote for the people around me, I still do to a certain extent but it’s different. I don’t write songs my “bandmates want to play anymore”. In those days I wanted everyone to play songs they liked and that acted as a filter for me as a songwriter. What’s good or bad was decided by the four of us, but it was all my music. They became critics really. I made the decisions on the songs but if they didn’t like it, it usually got side-lined. What made it tough was how much their taste in music didn’t really align with what I wanted to explore as an artist. I’ll be frank, I didn’t like a lot of the stuff they liked and vice versa, although there were a lot we did align on. I am really proud of the songs on my first album written during this period, but I don’t think I could’ve kept writing songs with those walls around me.
So, ‘Wasted Time’ was the first time writing without those walls, and it was certainly different, but it’s also still my song so it can only be so different. I’d describe it as more meaty, and more experimental, while it also sticks to what I’m good at. I’m lucky to feel like I know most of my strengths and weaknesses as a writer. – Joshua Bowles
