Lissie today shares her new EP ‘Promises’, a covers EP with a unique touch. She has picked a six-song collection of famous and renowned songs that hold personal significance to her own life experiences. That personal touch gives the songs an added layer of emotion, bringing something fresh and unique to material that is still instantly recognisable. Listen HERE.
After previewing the collection with her interpretations of The Pretenders’ ‘I’ll Stand By You’ (a song that she sang to her husband Mike at their wedding reception) and Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘America’ (which inspired a yearning to explore the wider world when she first heard it as a teenager), Lissie launches the EP with a video for her version of The Bangles’ ‘Eternal Flame’.
She recorded ‘Eternal Flame’ with the Travelling Band in Norway many years ago, before unearthing it during the process of making this EP, and is happy for it to see the light. The accompanying visual is a simple idea perfectly executed, with Lissieperforming the song during a FaceTime call to a background that consists of beautiful images of the natural world.
Lissie says, “Throughout my career, I’ve always enjoyed covering songs that I love, that I felt like I could relate to my life andsing in my own voice with respect and reverence to the original. Every few years, I’ve put together a collection of cover songs that speak my current emotional language. We all go through phases and stages and music is such a gift for processing life events! I hope that you all enjoy my take on these meaningful and precious songs!”
The ‘Promises’ EP is completed by three other brand new recordings. She puts a modern country-rock spin on Fleetwood Mac’s sleek ‘80s pop classic ‘Everywhere’, and reshapes Alphaville’s ‘Forever Young’ with a contemporary style – a song she chose after her niece performed the song when Lissie danced with her father during her wedding day. Lissie’s final choice is the least well-known but arguably the most intriguing, as she infuses Low’s sparse ‘Just Make It Stop’ with an anxious beat and a touch of melancholy slide guitar.
She adds, “Recording ‘Just Make It Stop’ felt like a promise to keep believing in the fight that goes on; in goodness and outrage!”
The ‘Promises’ EP is Lissie’s first body of work since her acclaimed 2022 album ‘Carving Canyons’. The album was her fifth as she continued a journey which has seen her heralded as one of the great songwriters of her era. She debuted in 2010 with an instant classic, the UK Gold-certified ‘Catching A Tiger’, and later hit the UK Top 10 with ‘Castles’.
Her TV projects have been select but high profile, most notably a performance of ‘Wild West’ in the late David Lynch’s ‘Twin Peaks: The Return’. She also played a musician engaged in an on/off relationship with a music critic in the cult comedy-drama ‘Loudermilk’.
Next month will see Lissie head to Norway to embark upon a unique Alvarado Moon tour alongside Øystein Greni. Tickets for the dates, listed below, are available HERE.
