Sir Paul McCartney, Simon Le Bon and Steve Van Zandt’s ‘Little Steven’s Underground Garage’ have all contributed to the rise of Leonie Jakobi, while tastemaker support has included 6 Music, BBC Introducing, Planet Rock, Sirius XM, House of Solo and Music Talkers. Her full talents are set to be discovered when she releases her debut album ‘What Are The People Gonna Say?’ on September 5th. She today shares the latest preview of the record with the new single ‘The Life My Parents Had’. Listen HERE.
‘The Life My Parents Had’ serves up a summer cocktail of Beach Boys shimmer, surf-rock nostalgia and Springsteen-style storytelling. That provides the bright and groovy setting for Leonie to pose questions about how her life differs from that of her parents. She lives between the UK and Germany, and is always excited by opportunities to take her music on new adventures. In contrast, her parents were together since her mother was eighteen and her father lived in the same house for his entire life. But this is a song about respecting and acknowledging how we’re all different, with varying desires and expectations.
Leonie says, “‘The Life My Parents Had’ dives into the push and pull of growing up: questioning whether the life you once watched your parents live is something to run from or circle back to. It captures that restless twenty-something feeling of chasing freedom, doubting tradition, and wondering if safety and simplicity might be more meaningful than you thought.”
‘The Life My Parents Had’ was written by Leonie and produced by her regular collaborator Arielle. It was during that trip that Leonie captured the majority of the ‘What Are The People Gonna Say?’ album. The studio’s array of analogue and vintage equipment helped create the warmth of music inspired by Americana, heartland rock, blues and power-pop from the ‘60s through to the ‘80s. But its narratives and talking points come from an artist who is making her way in life on her own terms in the present day, making for an engaging mix of the classic with the contemporary.
‘What Are The People Gonna Say?’ is available to pre-order HERE and will be released on vinyl and CD. It includes this new single and her recent tracks ‘So Much Love To Give’, ‘I Deserve To Shine’ and ‘Don’t Mind Me (While I Give You Up)’.
