Kreator // Carcass // Exodus // Nails // Live Review // The Brixton Academy // London

The Titans of Germany Thrash have returned to UK soil! And what unfolded at the O2 Academy Brixton wasn’t just a concert; it was a true masterclass in extremity, precision, and sheer physical force. With Kreator headlining and a stacked bill featuring grindcore legends Carcass, Bay Area thrashers Exodus, and the mammoth that is California hardcore threat Nails, the night felt like everything from savage abrasion to a triumphant arena-level thrash spectacle.

From the moment doors opened, there was a sense among the crowd that this wasn’t just another tour stop. This was one of those rare “all killer, no filler” lineups that metal fans dream about—and judging by the packed floor and balcony, London knew it.

Opening the night at 6:20 sharp, Nails wasted absolutely no time establishing the tone. Their set was short, violent, and utterly uncompromising … exactly as expected. Frontman Todd Jones stalked the stage with minimal movement, letting the music do the damage.

Nails are a band close to my heart. Being a fan since their first release “Unsilent Death”, they have been a band full of passion that thrives in the underground hardcore space, but even on a huge stage like tonight, their three pieces, pissed off & punishing aggression was felt.

Their sound is an unholy fusion of grindcore, hardcore, and death metal that hits like a blunt instrument. Songs like “You Will Never Be One of Us” and “Lacking the Ability to Process Empathy” detonated in rapid succession, barely giving the audience time to recover between blasts.

The crowd reaction was immediate, which is so great to see. It might still be early in the night, but the venue was already packed to the gills! Early arrivals surged forward, forming the first pit of the night within seconds. There was no warm-up period, just instant immersion into chaos.

Nails’ strength lies in their economy: no banter, no theatrics, just relentless sonic punishment. By the time they left the stage, the room already felt like it had been through a full headline set. And yet, three bands were still to come.

Next up, Exodus took the stage and immediately shifted the energy from oppressive intensity to full-throttle thrash celebration. As one of the originators of Bay Area thrash, they brought both legacy and credibility.

Led by the ever-charismatic Steve “Zetro” Souza, Exodus delivered a set that balanced old-school aggression with newer material. The band tore through classics like “Bonded by Blood”, “A Lesson in Violence”, and the immortal “Strike of the Beast,” alongside newer cuts such as “Goliath” and “3111.”

The crowd was explosive! Circle pits widened, crowd surfers began pouring over the barrier, and the floor became a sea of constant motion. When the opening riff of “The Toxic Waltz” hit, the entire venue seemed to bounce in unison. Added with a few teases & even the intro riff to “Raining Blood”, this track was great to see live.

What makes Exodus so compelling live is their balance of rawness and groove. Guitarists Gary Holt and Lee Altus delivered razor-sharp riffs, while drummer Tom Hunting anchored everything with punishing precision. Souza, meanwhile, acted as both ringmaster and agitator, constantly urging the crowd to go harder & pushing for them to have a great time. By the end of their 45-minute set, Brixton was fully ignited.

Now for the surgical precision of the grindcore legends Carcass, who brought a distinctly different energy, less chaotic than Nails & less party-driven than Exodus, but arguably the most technically refined performance of the night. Every time I’ve seen Carcass, whether it’s been at Bloodstock 2024 or on their B market tour in 2023, their sets are always so much fun. The band has a 40-year legacy, but every time I see them, it’s like seeing them live for the first time again, and they’re still having so much fun as a band now as they did in the 90s.

Frontman & bassist Jeff Walker delivered his signature snarling vocals with dry wit between songs, while guitarist Bill Steer effortlessly switched between intricate lead work and crushing rhythm passages.

Songs like “Heartwork”, “Buried Dreams”, and newer material from their recent output showcased the band’s unique blend of melody and brutality. Their sound was immaculate, every note cutting through with clarity, every tempo change executed absolutely flawlessly.

While pits still raged, there was also a noticeable increase in headbanging and focused attention. Carcass demands engagement not just physical, but musical. Jeff Walker demands it from the crowd, “fists in the air… now double fistting”. Jeff can always make a joke out of anything. Gotta love it.

Daniel Wilding’s drumming was particularly impressive, navigating complex arrangements with ease, while second guitarist Ben Ash added depth and texture to the live sound.

By the end of their set, Carcass had elevated the night from pure aggression to something more sophisticated yet classic in its feel. a firm reminder that these extreme metal icons are going to live up to us all.

While the stage crew were getting Kreator‘s mammoth production ready, the atmosphere reached a fever pitch. As one of the “Big Four” of Teutonic thrash metal, their influence is immense, and their live show proved exactly why.

Frontman Mille Petrozza, the band’s founding member and driving force since 1982, commanded the stage with absolute authority. Alongside drummer Jürgen “Ventor” Reil (another original member), guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö, and bassist Frédéric Leclercq, Kreator delivered a set that felt both celebratory and devastating.

The setlist was a career-spanning assault. Classics like “People of the Lie”, “Betrayer”, and “Pleasure to Kill” sat alongside newer material such as “Krushers of the World” and “Satan Is Real.”

From the opening moments, the stage production was on another level, with pyrotechnic bursts, massive backdrops, and dramatic lighting transforming Brixton into a war zone. The band’s energy was relentless, but what stood out most was their connection with the audience.

Petrozza repeatedly addressed the crowd, calling for unity, chaos, and total participation. During “Hordes of Chaos (A Necrologue for the Elite)”, the entire venue became a synchronised storm of death colliding with a breathtaking force.

Musically, Kreator was flawless. Petrozza’s rhythm playing was tight and aggressive, while Yli-Sirniö’s leads soared above the mix. Ventor’s drumming was thunderous, driving each song forward with unwavering intensity.

Tracks like “Phantom Antichrist” and “Enemy of God” showcased the band’s more modern, melodic side, while “Endless Pain” and “Violent Revolution” reminded everyone of their roots.

The encore pushed things even further, culminating in a final stretch that left the crowd exhausted but exhilarated.

What truly defined the night wasn’t just the performances; it was the crowd. From the earliest moments of Nails to the final notes of Kreator, the audience was fully engaged & reminded me that extreme music in 2026 is alive & well.

This wasn’t just a gig; it was a gathering of a global subculture, united by a shared love of extreme music. This tour had been hyped as one of the heaviest lineups of 2026, and it delivered on every single level.
