Band founders Rob Fleming and James Sedge started the band to channel their passion for ‘70s art-rock and modern alternative sounds, while fate drew a phenomenal team of stellar David Bowie band members/collaborators into their world. That resulted in glowing reviews for their self-titled debut from MOJO, The Times and RnR and sold out live shows in the UK and USA. Now they look ahead to the March 20th release of their second album ‘The Afterglow’ by sharing its title track as their new single. Listen HERE. Watch the video HERE.
After the swaggering first single ‘So Easy’, KillerStar hit harder with the potent, high-tempo ‘The Afterglow’. Its driving intensity and soaring hook make for an instantly captivating anthem, but it also provides the space for all of its musicians to shine. Earl Slick’s lead guitar is irresistible: a free-flowing balance between pure melody and a gritty edge from a man currently commemorating the 50th anniversary of his work on Bowie’s classic ‘Station To Station’. There’s also wonderfully unorthodox keys from Mike Garson (‘Aladdin Sane’, ‘Young Americans’ and more) while soaring backing vocals from The Webb Sisters (Leonard Cohen, Dave Gilmour) provide a counterpoint to Rob Fleming’s strident lead.
This is all underpinned by a rock solid groove driven by James Sedge’s drums, Rob Fleming’s crunchy rhythm guitar and virtuoso Bass playing by Mark Plati (David Bowie’s Earthling among many others)
Rob Fleming says, “The Afterglow is the title track from our new album of the same name. The song aims to invoke that euphoric glow/ feeling you get after watching a great live show or playing music onstage. We feel this is reflected in the energy of the playing on this song, all musicians playing as one serving the song, it propels forward at pace sprinkled with some ear worm riffs and hooks.”
This song and all of the songs on the new album were written by Rob Fleming, with James Sedge, and the duo produced the set alongside Dave Eringa (Manic Street Preachers, The Who) who also mixed the album. The album sessions feature several other contributors too, including acclaimed solo artist Emm Gryner, Gerry Leonard (musical director and guitarist for Bowie’s ‘Heathen’ tour), Alfio Annibali(Alex Lifeson’s Envy Of None), Dom Beken (Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets) Carey Frank (Bruce Springsteen).
The album was completed with digital mastering courtesy of Joe La Porta at Sterling Sound and vinyl mastering by Miles Showell atAbbey Road Studios. It was recorded between London, New York and Los Angeles during sessions at studios including RAK, The Clubhouse, Strongroom and Dean Street Studios – the latter of which was famously owned by Tony Visconti and was where he completed work on ‘Scary Monsters’.
