The Usual Suspects album was originally released in 2017 and featured new recordings of some of Jah Wobble’s finest solo material alongside tracks from the catalogues of The Invaders Of The Heart and Public Image Limited, representing an incredible and genre-busting career that spans over 40 years. Unavailable for almost a decade, the record now changes hands at collector prices.
The 23 studio tracks were recorded at The Smokehouse studios in East London and include a reworking of Public Image from the groundbreaking debut PIL album in 1978; a live recording of Poptones from the seminal PIL album Metal Box; versions of cinematic scores Midnight Cowboy and Get Carter which continue to pepper Wobble’s live shows; Dawn Penn’s You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No) featuring vocals by Aurora Dawn; a new version of Visions Of You, which appeared on Wobble’s Rising Above Bedlam album – nominated for a Mercury Prize on its release in 1992; and a live recording of the Harry J Allstars rocksteady classic The Liquidator.
“The Usual Suspects is a one-stop shop: 25 career highlights across two CDs re-recorded with the latest line up of the remarkable Invaders Of The Heart. There’s jazz-level musicianship throughout and yet, crowd pleaser that he is, Wobble never ceases to entertain. As a live date, they’re staggeringly good and The Usual Suspects effectively duplicates the dancehall experience for armchair skankers. It’s an utter cheek tonguing joy from start to finish.” LOUDER THAN WAR
The Usual Suspects CD and download will be available via Bandcamp here:

With a full vinyl and CD release available in 2026.
Jah Wobble was born John Wardle in 1958 – renamed by Sid Vicious who, under severe influence one night, struggled to pronounce his name correctly – and is an English bassist, singer and composer. He began his incredible career in music as a founding member of Public Image Limited in 1978 with Keith Levene and former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon and quickly became known for his distinctive and trailblazing bass, combining elements of dub, funk and world music. During his time with PiL, he played on the band’s acclaimed albums First Issue and Metal Box and collaborated with Keith Levene on a variety of side projects.
He left PiL in 1980 to pursue a solo career, releasing his debut album The Legend Lives On … Jah Wobble In Betrayal, followed by a succession of acclaimed solo albums and collaborations with the likes of Brian Eno, Sinead O’Connor, Bjork, Holger Czukay from Can, Chris Connelly from Ministry, The Edge from U2 and Geordie Walker from Killing Joke. His work showcased his unique style and his interest in world music, particularly that of Africa and the Middle East, and his ability to blend diverse styles into a cohesive whole continues to receive accolades.
Wobble is also a prolific writer and author, having published numerous books on music, politics and spirituality, as well his autobiography Dark Luminosity: Memoirs Of A Geezer which was expanded and reprinted by Faber last year, earning wholesome praise from The Times Literary Supplement and The Independent amongst others. He is also renowned for his interest in Eastern philosophy, having written extensively on the subject.
As a musician and artist he remains highly influential and continues to make a significant impact on the world of music and beyond, ensuring his status as an original and important figure in the history of the arts. He has stories to tell and recounts them with charm, with humour and with honesty.
“It’s rare to see this level of musicianship, especially from a live performance. Esoteric to the nth degree, tonight’s offering might well be the closest thing to a late Frank Zappa concert, with its perfect blend of wackiness, originality and musical prowess. They are a band that will catch you by the sleeve and drag you into a manic, perplexing environment that you were unlikely to have given permission for, let alone have consciously chosen …” BUZZ MAGAZINE
“An epic performance by a true punk original and genre-hopping pioneer. They don’t make geezers like this anymore …” EDINBURGH REPORTER
“Unstructured, raw and beautiful … like nothing I’ve ever seen live before. In a world becoming more fake and uncertain by the minute, in that concert hall on a Thursday night, we all experienced something truly special …” QUENCH MAGAZINE
“Wobble smiles with the smile of a man who knows that his band is made up of astonishingly talented musicians who will always – whatever capricious demands he throws their way – lock in, groove and vibe until all possible cows have gone home and tried to write reviews of it. He’s a full on entertainer, conducting the band with imperious gestures and – every time the music stops – undercutting any potential muso pomposity by ribbing the band mercilessly. His favourite foil is the amazingly precise drummer, Marc Layton-Bennett, who received the roughest onstage banter, but also the biggest hug at the end of the night …” IN COMMON
