Today, New York duo Grist Mil share “How To Dissociate,” the second single from their upcoming EP, midheaven, scheduled for release on June 23rd. Synthesizers layer with dense guitars to create an indie meets electronic-pop swirl as downbeat vocals mesh with reverberation building an infectious sound. Nodding to lost love and the emergence of multiple-personalities it ties into the depressive state of the character that’s storied throughout the EP. The black and white video is perfectly haunting, spanning from contemplative to manically emotive, and can be watched here now. Expanding on the lyrics of “How To Dissociate,” vocalist Derrick Sherman states: “The song is about not being happy with your life’s status, and questioning if you’re in control of your own actions. It’s about codependency, complacency and not connecting with a lover and/or society.” First started in 2020 for his solo-output, Derrick Sherman (Sainthood Reps) joined forces with Nick Amalfitano (Family Dinner) to create midheaven. Across the four songs on the EP, the duo have taken their indie and alternative roots and built them into a shoegazey fever dream laced with electronic elements. The EP was recorded over two sessions, with Sherman performing vocals, guitar, and bass and Amalfitano on drums, synthesizer, and additional guitar work. Gary Cioni (Hot Mulligan, Free Throw) engineered and produced “When I Run” and “Shadow” at Sound Acres Studios, and Brett Romnes (I Am The Avalanche, The Movielife) engineered and produced “How to Dissociate “ and “Wearing You” at Barbershop Studios. Legendary producer Mike Sapone (The Front Bottoms, Oso Oso, Grouplove) mixed and added additional production to all four songs. Grist Mil will hit the stage in Long Beach, NY with Oso Oso at Bright Eye Beer Co. tonight, June 14th and is slated to open Balance and Composure’s reunion shows in Philadelphia this weekend. | ||||||||||||||||
